Significant Improvements to the 'Browse Shelf List' Function Needed
The 'Browse Shelf List" function is essential for catalogers in our library and is extremely clunky and time-consuming to use. Proposing any (hopefully all) of the following changes:
Ability to view more results surrounding the exact search request.
Said in a different way, the ability to view the result in the middle of the results page, so as to be able to see a few of the results both before and after. This makes call number adjustment significantly easier, instead of always needing to click a back button and remember what the call number were on the page before.Ability to view shelf-list in Primo with one click.
Ability to actually be able to see the entire call number in the call number field (see screen shot with blue arrow).
If I need to type the call number by hand, or edit it at all, it is very difficult to see the entire thing or use this field if it cuts itself off.
Removal of the need to click into the call number field to search the shelf listing.
Ability to search the shelf list by call number that ignores sub-field labels.
It appears to me that “Browse Shelf Listing” is done only against the 050 field in a bib record and only against the subfield “a” in that 050 field. This greatly limits the usefulness of this tool.
Not to mention, call numbers can be found in 099 and 090 fields, requiring copy paste.
Thus, the only way to search the shelf list accurately is to copy and paste the call number into that tiny, tiny box, then edit out the $$a, $$b, $$h and so on. This is a painful experience on 20+ books a day.
The Alma Browse Shelf Listing enhancements are completed.
This includes the following:
1. Author information will be displayed in the browse results, to assist in adding call number cutter for libraries that use author information for this.
2. Call number auto-population will also work for local 09X fields.
3. Read-only access was added, so that all users can now browse shelf listing (similar to browse bib and authority headings)
For more information please refer to the online help for Browse Shelf Listing.

Dear all,
I'd like to update that the requested improvements to Browse Shelf Listing are planned to be completed in the November 24 release, with the addition of:
1. Displaying the author information separately in the browse results, to assist in adding call number cutter for libraries that use author information for this.
2. Supporting local 09X fields in the call number auto-population.
3. Read-only access will be added, so that all users will be able to browse shelf listing (similar to browse bibliographic and authority headings).
Regards,
Lili -
Dear all,
I'd like to update on some further improvements to Browse Shelf Listing planned for May 24 release, for MARC21 and KORMARC call number fields:
1. Automatic population of the "Call Number" field in the browse will be extended to not only $a, but also $b when cursor is in the following bibliographic fields: 050, 055, 060, 070, 080, 082, 084.
2. Automatic population of the "Call Number" field in the browse will be populated by $h and $i when cursor is in bibliographic field 852.In addition, following the semi-annual indexing, data from $b of the following fields will be part to the following call number search indexes in the repository search:
LC call number: 050, 055, 090
Universal Decimal Class Number: 080
Dewey Decimal Class Number: 082, 092
Other Classification Number: 084 -
Dear all,
I'd like to update on some of the requested improvements that were added to Browse Shelf Listing:
1. Ability to view more results surrounding the exact search request - this was done as part of the August 23 release and is available in production.
2. Making the drop-down menu values sticky - this was done as part of the November 23 release and is now available in Sandbox environments. Alma remembers the settings the user last set for "Call Number Level", "Call Number Type", "Library", and "Location" - the settings are updated only if the operator manually changes the selection in one of the drop-downs before triggering the browse action (note that the remembered settings are used only when opening a blank Browse Shelf Listing form, and not when opening a pre-populated form from a call number field or the Item Editor). -
Dear all, I’d like to update you on the status of this idea:
The following requests from the original idea description, as well as some mentioned in many comments, are on our roadmap, and will be gradually developed and released in the coming releases:
1. Ability to view more results surrounding the exact search request.
2. Making the drop-down menu values sticky.
3. Adding Author/1xx information. For some of these requests, support was already added:
1. Ability to actually be able to see the entire call number in the call number field – the call number field is now longer, to show the entire call number.
2. Removal of the need to click into the call number field to search the shelf listing – the browse shelf listing and browse bib headings are available in the menu without having to navigate into a specific field. When browsing shelf listing from a bib record, if you do click on a specific call number field (e.g. 050, 082), the browse value is automatically populated from it. We are looking into the possibility of also auto-populating values from local call number fields (09X).We would also appreciate if you could please share some more details on the following requests, to help us understand the need:
1. Ability to view shelf-list in Primo with one click.
2. Ability to search the shelf list by call number that ignores sub-field labels.
Thanks! -

Is this still in the works? I see this was set as planned back in 2019.
In addition to starting list in middle (or at very least, a quarter of the way through), please add a way to browse all the DDC (or LC) numbers at once, as a default. Currently I get significantly different results searching for DDC numbers. Since my library primarily uses LC, unless I remember to change the "call number type" I get a few "LC" numbers with my DDC search. The bulk of the results are under Dewey Decimal classification once I remember to switch to this, but I also have some results under ALL the different "call number types." This is NOT HELPFUL, especially when attempting to assign call numbers by checking the shelf list without physically going to the shelves.

Adding a column for the Author/1xx field would be a significant improvement to the Browse Shelf Listing in Alma. Shelf listing is accomplished my cuttering against the 1xx field, or 245 field if there is no 1xx field. With the current shelflisting display, it is extremely difficult to identify the 1xx field.

I would like to second Corinna Baksik's comment from September 11, 2019 3:35 PM about the stickiness. It always starts with the library+location of the item being catalogued, when my institution needs to shelflist against every library and location. It would be incredibly helpful if the user could choose a default setting here.

I heartily endorse the first noted improvement in the list: "the ability to view the result in the middle of the results page, so as to be able to see a few of the results both before and after" in order to more quickly shelflist without having to page back to see the if there are related Cutters.
I also second the suggestion in a comment below to add 1XX to the column in the results list to allow for easier shelfisting.

please add additional column in the Browse Shelf Listing results for any 1xx; this will help to establish cutters for authors, and is very important for example for Arabic names, that are difficult to determine just from the Description column. Thanks.

We would want a column added for the Author/1xx field when using the Browse Shelf Listing in Alma. Our institution migrated from Voyager to Alma, and with Voyager, we used to get better results searching by Call number. We were able to see the Call Number, Full Title, Author, and Library. We were also able to sort by Author, Date, Title, or call number--we are missing these options! Maybe the column with the "Holdings" information could be linked to the Call Number instead. Doing this would allow adding the column for the author.

It could be really helpful to be able to change the sorting order of the Browse Shelf Listing (A-Z/Z-A)

We're glad this work is planned. We would also like to add that we have found the 'Browse Shelf List' function in the MD Editor impossible to work with for call number searching. It is extremely small; only displays approx 10 call numbers per page; we have to keep scrolling through the pages (it doesn't list the number of pages you are scrolling through so you don't know how much there is to check, all that displays is < > arrows and there is no number to indicate how many holdings have that call number overall).
We would like the ability to search call numbers in a compact view (that can be expanded to show more information) - to quickly browse what is at that location to help with classification choice and to be able to see the call numbers around the call number searched for.
Also, ensure call numbers are filed in numerical order on Alma and that there is an 'exact call number' search that brings back that exact call number only.

1. The "Description" should start with the authorized access point (=main entry), which is usually what the Cutter or work letter is based upon. In any sequence of call numbers, some may be based on the author and others on the title. It would be helpful to see how that particular sequence has been arranged.
2. The call number should align with the first line of the Description, rather than appear in the middle of the cell, so as to make it easier to match a Cutter or work letter with the beginning of the Description upon which it is based.
3. All choices for a browse should be remembered the next time (the "stickiness" Corinna Baksik mentioned). -

There is also a lack of stickiness. All dropdowns sticky (type, library, location) so that every time you go to the list your last selection is remembered.

Emelia, that's interesting that it doesn't sort DDC right, given what a common system it is. Alma doesn't sort the government document schemes we use right either.
I wonder if it would be possible to have a way to let users toggle between "sort cutters as whole numbers" and "sort cutters as decimals" to accommodate a variety of call number schemes? Or something like that.
And it would be helpful if it pulled from more than just the 852 so that records which should have one but lack it for whatever reason are included. It's frustrating when you know a record exists but it doesn't show up in the browse list, and you start wondering how many other records are missing because the system is designed assuming that every record in every library has perfect data. Aleph was better about including all results that should be in the list--I miss that!

The Browse Shelf List also includes suppressed titles. It would be beneficial for libraries to be able to decide whether suppressed titles should be included or, at a minimum, for the browse shelf list to include the suppressed icon next to the relevant titles.

I don't use this at all because when using DDC trying to choose a shelf list number when they go from 1 to 10 to 100 is just plain confusing!
eg.
170 1
170 10
170 100
170 101
[next page...]
170 102 etcSo the ability to sort in proper numerical order like in Primo would be great. And it would reduce the amount of duplicate shelf list numbers we have to correct.

I think the poster is confusing "Browse Bib Headings: Call Number" with the Browse Shelf List when they talk about 050 etc.
Browse Shelf List is and should remain based on the 852 of the call number.

I don't understand -- the shelflisting browse searches the 852, right? Do you want it to combine 852, 09X, and 05x?

Agree with all the comments. Plus the recent updates have changed the way it functions. Now if you click on a record in the shelf list to look at the bib record, the bib record opens in edit mode in the right hand panel and the shelf list is in the left panel. Can't easily close/release that bib record to return to display of the bib record I am working on and the browse shelf list to continue to determine a call number. Or if there is a way, I have not found it. Thanks!
