Make Alma link resolver compatible with EndNote's "Find Full Text" feature
EndNote offers a "Find Full Text" feature that allows users to locate full text for citations saved to their library. The feature can be configured to work with your institution's link resolver. However, according to EndNote customer support, the Alma link resolver is not currently compatible with this feature. This enhancement would allow Alma customers to locate full text for EndNote citations via openURL.
Endnote 20.3 " Find Full Text" can now be configured to locate and download full text for references using Alma's link resolver.
Instruction for setting the integration can be found in the following blog

We've moved beyond early 2022 now. Can we get an update, please? This continues to be a huge pain point.

Is there any update on this issue since the Clarivate acquisition of ProQuest/Ex Libris, since EndNote is a Clarivate product?

We'll be migrating to Alma next summer and our users will be unhappy about this loss of functionality - hoping that late 2021 / early 2022 update on the Clarivate side will happen.

Since the last update from Dana Moshkovits was from Oct 2019, are there any further updates Ex Libris? It has been 2 years and full-text linking from EndNote using the Alma link resolver still doesn't work and we continue to get questions/dissatisfaction from our users about this.

I just contacted our EndNote rep about this issue. He says to expect a patch for EndNote late in 2021 or early in 2022 to include this functionality. He also said they are waiting on Ex Libris to work with them to finalize the integration.

We are having issues with pulling in Full text using Alma link resolver. We fully support this development. Is there any update on it since last October?

We are currently experiencing the same issue at NIH Library. We fully support this development.

We also support getting the Alma/Primo link resolver and EndNote Find Full Text features to work with one another.

We use the Alma link resolver and it seems to work fine for the Find Full Text feature in Endnote as long we we are authenticating with EZproxy. However, we have found that it is not compatible with OpenAthens.

Hello,
According to our understanding, in order to integrate Find Full Text' with Alma, End Note will need to use Alma OpenURL XML response:
https://developers.exlibrisgroup.com/alma/integrations/discovery/services_page/
We have contact End Note support with this information and also indicated that we will be very happy to work with them in order to enable the integration and that we are willing to make any adjustments if needed. We are waiting to hear back from them.

I too support the development/introduction of this feature.

The last communication I had about this was Nov 2019. I sent contact info to both Clarivate and ExL folks so they could talk about how to make EndNote and the Alma OpenURL resolver work together.
As is typical of both companies -- no communication since about any progress.
I had high hopes that Third Iron's LibKey 2.0 could fix the problem; but so far, no. The Third Iron team says they are doing more R&D, though.
At this point, I'm going to assume OpenURL through EndNote is a lost cause. Even though this is clearly a loss of functionality if you move from SFX, 360, or Summon to Alma or Primo.

It would be great if EndNote and Ex Libris could collaborate to improve the process; I appreciate that Ex Libris is interested. Can we get an update? Did Ex Libris get answers to the questions Dana asked in October 2019 re: what features are missing, an EndNote contact, and examples? The only info I have is EndNote's statement, "we support Open URL from SFX, which offers XML responses via REST. Other services, like Primo and Alma, did not support this at the time of Find Full-Text feature development" which suggests that the problem is a lack of XML responses via REST -- but what else? And what can we all do? (I am reaching out to EndNote also.)

This is especially important since our researchers may be working remotely for some time. It goes beyond Clarivate's set up, too - doesn't work reliably in Zotero. When on campus I got 4/5 PDFs on a sample set; off campus 0/5 for both EndNote and Zotero with our OpenURL settings.

To me, this problem can be broken down fairly simply:
1. Endnote's Find Fulltext feature is an EndNote feature, not an Ex Libris Feature. Therefore, primary responsibility for upgrading this feature rests with Clarivate, not ExL.
2. This feature was designed to work with SFX (among others) but not the Alma link resolver. I suspect its development predated the Alma link resolver.
3. Libraries whose users rely heavily on this need to be communicating to Clarivate that there is an increasing trend to replace SFX with the Alma link resolver as libraries migrate to Alma in increasing numbers. Therefore, if this feature is to remain valuable to users, it must work with Alma's link resolver. Clarivate should contact ExL to make that happen, similar to whatever process they used to make the feature work with SFX.
4. Slightly off-topic, but while we're on the phone/e-mail with Clarivate, let's throw in a request to make them add an RIS export feature to the Web of Science platform. They are the ONLY ones who still lack this feature. I tweeted this request to them and got nothing back.

Everyone supporting this idea needs to communicate to Clarivate that they need to work with ExL to solve this problem. The standard response from Clarivate is:
Please note we support Open URL from SFX, which offers XML responses via REST. Other services, like Primo and Alma, did not support this at the time of Find Full-Text feature development. For ExLibris customers, we normally recommend that they check with the providers to get an Open URL Resolver from ExLibris Group's SFX offering, which a lot of times different than the web UI (user interface) their users visit. It is very challenging to give a definitive list of all resources EndNote uses when obtaining PDFs since EndNote also uses other services for full-text retrievals, such as PubMed link-out and the Links Gateway from Web of Science.
ExL wants to fix this gap in Alma.
They need proper contacts at Clarivate.
They need specs for fixing the gap. -

The Find Full text feature of Endnote is the most sought after need for many of our Endnote users. The feature saves time for attaching multiple pdf's at one instead of individual items; it provides a seamless connection between our institution's licensed resources and user's Endnote libraries. Why make it harder for these users when they are the biggest consumers of your product and purchased them from their own pocket or grant accounts only to be totally frustrated with a time-saving element that's not working for them. Please consider fixing this issue. Thank you.
