  1. More flexibility in student works that are part of degree requirement

We need more flexibility in student works that are part of degree requirements (degree culminating publications). These are often thought of as ETDs (theses and dissertations). However, some degrees do not require a thesis or dissertation and instead have a a capstone or a case report. These are very different than a thesis/dissertation, but the only option for student work at the end of a degree are the ETD options. This means that a quite short case report is displaying as a dissertation - https://iro.uiowa.edu/esploro/outputs/9984560345602771

The ETD type is good because we want the advisors handled in the same manner…

  2. Allow users to sort assets

In the Scholarship section of the profile, assets appear in reverse chronological order and there is no way to change the sort. Please add a sort feature as we have in Primo.

  3. Expertise Finder

Esploro is capable of being an Expert Finder but limited to subject matter expertise gleaned from your Research Topics. What about an entire area for Expertise in the profile? The idea would be to list things you consider yourself an expert in (using the same taxomonies already available or free text) and offer toggles for :
    -willing to be contacted about
    -willing to mentor
-willing to assist in an emergency
-willing to serve on a committee
    etc..

Then the expertise is explicitly searchable and also indicative of people willing to apply that expertise in those scenarios. Then we would not…

  4. Option to sort collections by date

We would like the option to set the default sort for collections to be by date. Relevance is not useful for collections because they are a preselected group of materials; there is not yet a search for which relevance applies. We often use collections to highlight new content so it would be helpful if we could have new content at the top of the results by default so users do not need to change the sort order.

  5. Cover images for metadata only items

We would like a way to have a thumbnail/cover image associated with a metadata only item, particularly a book. We would want the cover to display in a collection like this https://iro.uiowa.edu/esploro/search/collections/Recent-Books-by-UI-Authors/Books?institution=01IOWA_INST to make it look more engaging. The image should as display on a profile, and it should be part of the import to Primo so that it displays there as well. The cover needs to be marked in some way as a cover image so it does not appear to be something with full text available; a cover image should NOT make the asset be flagged as OA.…

  6. Tagging Selected Outputs in Esploro

1.0 Proposal to tag or highlight selected outputs

We would like to explore the possibility of “tagging” (or similar demarcation) selected outputs in Esploro to differentiate / highlight them.

This tagging will be additional to the current search / refine options (such as Research Unit or Subject).
All forms of outputs (articles, data sets etc) should be eligible for tagging.

For example, we may want to “tag” Covid-19 research papers and data, or other key research on particular themes or goals.

Ideally, there should also be an option of sub-tagging eg. a main tag, and a sub-tag (ie. the option…

  7. Scopus integration

Can an integration be developed with researcher's Scopus IDs (similar to the ORCID integration) to enable researchers to link their Scopus accounts with Esploro and allow publications listed on Scopus which are not in Esploro to be pulled through (and with any relevant SDG information)? Many researchers rely on data and publications lists on Scopus for their promotion attempts so it would be good if Esploro could integrate more with Scopus.

  8. Ability to merge multiple researchers from the manage researchers page

It would be helpful to have an option to merge multiple duplicate researchers at once from the manage researchers page, rather than relying solely on the bulk merge duplicate researchers report. Many times we need to look at the assets themselves to determine if the researchers are indeed identical.

  10. Add the ability to display PlumX metrics badges

We would like the ability to display PlumX badges for assets. Being able to display WOS and Altmetrics badges/metrics on assets is great, but WOS covers only a select group of journals. Adding the ability to also include PlumX badges on assets would expand our metrics coverage to give administrators the numbers they want, and give researchers a fuller, more accurate picture of the impact of their works. Metrics make the academic world go round. And the more information we can provide our users, the more buy in we encourage across campus.

  11. batch revise author role

We had a request to create a report identifying corresponding authors. We do not have this data in Esploro. We may be able to get this data, but we have no way to alter author roles in multiple assets in an efficient manner. As CREDIT and other uses of roles in an asset become more important for our faculty members and departments, having a way to add this information in an efficient manner would be very helpful

  12. Bulk updates to "Managed Externally" checkboxes

Currently, if the "Managed Externally" checkboxes are checked, faculty are unable to make changes to any of the fields. This became apparent when we noticed that prefilled Education fields (filled in during the time of our migration) were not accurate and the faculty members were not able to update it unless we uncheck these boxes. However, in a user's account there are up to 5-6 of these boxes. I was looking for a job that can bulk uncheck some if not all the boxes in all researchers.

  13. Include Asset ID and URL in Researcher Assets Usage Statistics Letter XML

The Researcher Assets Usage Statistics letter currently provides usage statistics for each output (title, date, views, and downloads) but does not include a unique asset identifier or public URL.
As a result, we are unable to hyperlink output titles in the letter directly to their corresponding records on the researcher portal.
We are requesting to add the following two fields to each usages/usage node:
    • assetid — the unique identifier for the output in Esploro
    • asset
url — the full public URL to the output on the researcher portal
This would enable researchers to navigate directly from their…

  14. Add ability to control thumbnail image and alt text

For assets that have multiple files uploaded, we would like to control which file/image is used for the thumbnail on the search results and assets page in Esploro. I have the following sample ETD where two JPG files are uploaded. I would like to use the image Collection.jpg as the thumbnail, but no matter what file name I use or what order I upload files in, the thumbnail continues to use the CollectionInvitation2.jpg file.

    https://eckerd-researchmanagement.esploro.exlibrisgroup.com/esploro/outputs/undergraduate/The-Collection-Senior-Thesis-Exhibition/992548163506111

There should be a field that allows us to choose which file should be used for the thumbnail image. In addition, there is no Alt…

  15. Impact Idea 4: Audit Trail for Project Edits

Implement an audit trail to track edits and deletions for Projects. This feature will enhance accountability and ensure that all changes are documented, helping to prevent unauthorized modifications or deletions by 'team members' leaving the university under less favorable conditions. It will also support teamwork by addressing trust issues in collaborative environments.

  16. Impact Idea 5: Moderation/Approval Step

Introduce a moderation step or approval process before Projects are made public. This step will ensure content quality and accuracy, maintaining high standards for Project visibility and reducing the likelihood of errors or inappropriate content being published.

  18. DataCite integration with research resources (equipment)

Esploro currently supports landing pages for research resources (such as equipment, instruments, and facilities), which is a great step toward improving visibility and discoverability. However, these resources are not yet integrated with Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) like DOIs, which are increasingly required under national and international PID strategies (e.g., Australia’s National PID Strategy).

Assigning DOIs to research resources ensures they are treated as research objects, enabling better tracking of usage, linking to related outputs and grants, and supporting reproducibility. DataCite provides a schema for minting DOIs for resources, but Esploro lacks a direct workflow for this integration.

  19. Enable suppression of assets on portal and profiles before approval of the asset

We can currently only suppress assets from the portal and profiles after we've approved the asset post. This approach carries the risk of forgetting to adjust the asset's visibility later, potentially leading to it being visible when it shouldn't be.

Ideally, you should be able to complete all aspects of an asset post, including adjusting its visibility, before approving it. This is particularly crucial for key functionalities like the visibility of an asset.

  20. Esploro metadata to be compatible with the USRN Desirable Characteristics of Digital Publication Repositories toolkit

The USRN Desirable Characteristics of Digital Publication Repositories toolkit (https://github.com/antleaf/USRN-Discovery/wiki/Toolkit) aims to provide repositories with a report to identify areas where the platform isn't meeting best practices for metadata. I have attached the report from our instance of Esploro which highlights that licence URLS on records aren't being picked up (and other issues). Can Esploro's metadata and OAI integration be improved to meet the requirements?
