Resource type for ceased print and electronic serial publications
Ceased and previous print and electronic serial titles (Newspaper, Journal, and Other Serials) are currently assigned a Resource Type of Undefined, based on 008 pos.6 (if pos.6 = d - continuing resource ceased publication). No other serial date statuses are explicitly excluded from Resource Type in this way.
This results in a significant functional impact in Alma as excluding ceased and previous title journals from the resource types associated with all other journals (including those with "unknown," "questionable," and other non-current date codes in 008 pos.6) makes it impossible to do a targeted repository search or analytics report. Forcing the inclusion of catch-all resource type "undefined" completely undermines the point of assigning resource types in the first place.
If "AND 008 pos. 06 != d" was simply removed from the Resource Type creation rules for Newspaper (physical, electronic), Journal (physical, electronic), and Other Serial (physical, electronic), Resource Type would be much more useful and facets and analytics reports for serials would work much better.

The July 2018 Release includes the following: The MARC 21 resource type options were updated with many changes to include ceased print and electronic serial publications, plus digital. Hello everyone.
I have created a file called "Resource Type Suggested Updates 20170528.txt" and attached it to this idea.
It includes all suggested technical changes all together in one organized manner.
Please take a loot at it and let me know if you think anything should be changed.
Note that in the document it is important the order, because once a match is found it exits (one resource type per record).
Best opened in notepad ++ but of course can view in other programs as well. -

I cannot understand the need to change resource type to tell if a serial is ceased or not! Add an extra filter for active or ceased based on the value in 008 pos 6 (c or d).
This way it doesn't mess up searching or analytics, and you can easily add or subtract the ceased ones by choice. What is the problem? -

Yoel's solution, posted 2/15, seems reasonable. We need to be able to report and search ALL serials, not just active ones, but being able to to separate into those currently published and those which have ceased is reasonable and potentially useful as well.

I would like to see ceased print and electronic serials defined correctly as serials. However, I also see the point of keeping as much as possible to the MARC standard. I think Yoel's solution since it stays with the standard and correctly identifies the resource type has potential, but it does mean adding the correct coding to records.

This sounds like a workable solution - adding a (ceased publication) type to each of the existing resource types. I could see this having a useful side effect in Alma repository search--being able to limit to current titles could be handy.
Thanks.

Please allow a clarification:
There was no development done here based exclusively on one specific institution's needs. Many institutions use and need this feature, and the resource types are based on standard MARC cataloging rules. They are not based on the cataloging practices of any one or any specific group of institutions.
Additionally, we realize that certain changes are needed to handled cases where the 008 field position 6 is "d".
This is because currently many definitions are made when 008 position 6 != d, and therefore when 008 position 6 = d it falls into a "undefined" category.
The likely way to solve this would be:
1. Duplicate the following lines which already exist and are in the On Line Help
2. Change the "008 pos. 06 != d" to "008 pos. 06 = d"
3. Add "(Ceased publication)" to the end of the resource type descriptionNewspaper - Physical LDR pos. 06 = a,e AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 != d AND 008 pos. 21 = n AND 008 pos. 23 != a,b,c,o,f
Newspaper - Electronic LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 != d AND 008 pos. 21 = n AND 008 pos. 23 = o
Journal - Physical LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 != d AND 008 pos. 21 = p AND 008 pos. 23 != a,b,c,o,f
Journal - Electronic LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 != d AND 008 pos. 21 = p AND 008 pos. 23 = o
Other Serial - Physical LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 != d AND 008 pos. 21 != n,p AND 008 pos. 23 != a,b,c,o,f
Other Serial - Electronic LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 != d AND 008 pos. 21 != n,p AND 008 pos. 23 = o

Adding a search index for 008/23 would make it possible to use advanced search to gather these statistics, surely?

Anne Munkebyaune's comment highlights an issue that I have had with system development for a very long time. Some features that are developed for a specific institution's needs end up being "hardwired" into the system, regardless of how appropriate they are (or in this case, are NOT) for other institutions using the same system. There are certainly other ways of harvesting active journal statistics that do not entail crippling some very basic functionality for the rest of the system's users.

As pointed out anything which has a 008 pos. 6 which is "d" has resource type "undefined".
The 008 pos. 6 means "ceased publication".If the following four conditions were added to the existing list would this be desired?
Here is the existing list:
https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/Alma_Online_Help_(English)/Resource_Management/020Using_the_Repository_Search/020Searching_in_the_Repository#Working_with_the_Resource_Type_FieldHere are four possible additions:
1. Serial, physical – Ceased publication LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 = d AND 008 pos. 23 != o,q,s
2. Serial, electronic – Ceased publication LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 = d AND 008 pos. 23 = o,q,sPut these (1 and 2 above) lines after the existing line "serial" lines
3. Newspaper, Physical - Ceased publication LDR pos. 06 = a,e AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 = d AND 008 pos. 21 = n AND 008 pos. 23 != a,b,c,o,f
4. Newspaper, Electronic - Ceased publication LDR pos. 06 = a AND LDR pos. 7 = i,s AND 008 pos. 06 = d AND 008 pos. 21 = n AND 008 pos. 23 = oPut these (3 and 4 above) lines after the existing line "newspaper" lines

The Resource type specifications were originally written as specification of the Norwegian national statistics. For the statistical purposes, We don’t want it to be changed. We need to count active journals.
When it comes to delimiting searches in Alma, I think we would benefit from certain improvements including the one in this idea-case. Among other things, I think searching/delimiting on databases and updating websites would be nice. (008 CR – pos. 21 “d” and “w”.)
