Enable journal coverage date ranges to be shown whilst still allowing direct linking.
Our students want Direct Linking enabled, because they expect to go straight to the full text of an item when they click on the search result. Our academics want to be able to see the range of dates for which we have access the journal title they've searched for, like they could when we were using SFX as our Journal search.
We have Direct linking enabled which means that journals we get from a single supplier go straight through to the journal without showing the coverage date range, causing numerous complaints from academics. We tried the solution suggested by the University of Sussex which was to add public notes to our journal titles to stop them from direct linking, but found that it also stops all the articles in that journal from direct linking which is not what we're looking for at all.
Please make it possible to show journal coverage date ranges in some way whilst still and allow all articles and other items to use direct linking.

Keren - I added an Idea regarding the journal coverage dates

Meredith, we probably do need a separate idea for journal coverage dates to show in the brief results page. The option to disable direct linking for journals now exists, but there still isn't a way to make the coverage dates appear in the brief results and our users would really appreciate it if we could do that.

I'd love to have an update to the last question from over a year ago. Any idea when this will actually happen in Alma resolver? I'm glad we'll be able to turn it off in A-Z list, but what about the idea of making it specific to resources i.e. Journals specifically?
We have The Boston Globe which is in two separate "portfolios" in Proquest Newsstand. The older date range is "above" the more recent, and unless the end user knows to go to the full record to pick the range they want, they are always getting sent to the older. Support doesn't seem to know a way to re-order the portfolios so at least direct linking provides access to the newer portfolio by default. Most people who look up a newspaper will initially want to browse recent issues.

Hi Dana, I couldn't spot this on the roadmap. Can you give us any idea of the timing for the release of this functionality?
Thanks, Keren -

Thanks for the update, Dana. We're delighted to hear this is planned.

Alma road map plans will provide the ability to specify for which OpenURL compliant sources you would like to disable direct linking.
As an example this will provide you the ability to disable direct linking for A-Z lists so users will be able to view the coverage associated with the journal.
Alma road map plans do not include the ability to disable/enable direct linking per type of user (student vs academics) as Alma ViewIt services does not require user identification. -

On further reflection the Direct Linking aspect is possibly distracting from the real user requirement, which is to have journal coverage dates shown for all journal title search results, preferably in the 'Brief results' tile.

This idea was moved to the Alma ideas forum under the Link Resolver category.
Thank you for your contribution.
