1. Allow view configuration to exclude retracted and withdrawn articles from results list

   The CDI Document Types labels and facets are valuable information. Now that we have that information, and the Document Types are also facets, can we please get the ability to set our discovery views to exclude these Retracted and Withdrawn articles (similarly to how we have the ability to set a view to exclude CDI ebook records)?

   I set up our custom primo search box widget on our library website to exclude these two resource types by default, and I locked those facets so they aren't lost on the next search. You can search the Combined Search box on our library site to try it out: https://www.normandale.edu/current-students/academic-resources/library/index.html

   But it's not a good work around. First, any time the user clicks on the New Search link in the menu, the facets are cleared. Second, when a user navigates from a CDI search to a local search (like our book search) or journal search the excluded facets are sticky in those searches too, even though they have no effect in those contexts. Also, by using the facet functionality to exclude these resource types, we are also in effect drawing extra attention to the existence of these unreliable sources in the library's collections.

   Although not a preferred solution because they would still be discoverable, I thought about possibly down boosting these two resource types. Currently, CDI document attributes are not boostable.

2. "Feedback Tool" for the New Primo UI: insert the e-mail of the logged in user automatically

   Currently the field "e-mail" in the Feedback form is defined as optional.

   As well as with the current e-mail functionality of bibliographic citations, we would expect the e-mail to be automatically pre-filled when a user is logged in. But unfortunately this does not happen.

   Please insert the e-mail of the logged in user automatically or at least give us the possibility to set this option in the Primo backend.

3. Fill the gap of Open Access CDI records not marked with the Open Access icon and facet

   The Open Access icon and facet were added to Primo in May 2018, per previous submission: https://ideas.exlibrisgroup.com/forums/308176-primo/suggestions/19130257-open-access-flag-for-open-access-content

   This is applied at metadata level by provider feed first for PCI and now CDI.
   This current decision is the root cause for a significant gap in the number of OA records incorrectly not marked as OA.
   For example, tens of thousands of PloS One articles not marked as OA.

   In September 2022 a change is made in terms of the link proxy being removed when it is determined at the link level that the access is OA.
   But unfortunately this change is not married with the OA icon and facet, and these will not be added to the record when this link level OA determination is made.

   This means that our patrons still miss out on the immediately clear indication in brief results by the icon that a resource is OA and they also have no ability to filter to this content.
   For many libraries, there are strategic institutional level goals to support and promote OA content, and this gap means that our discovery layers do not support us to align with these goals.

   A successful delivery of this idea would be that the OA icon and facet are also added to records when there is a link level determination of OA status, as well as metadata level. This idea applies regardless of Primo deployment model ie Primo managed via Back Office and Primo VE managed via Alma.

4. Display Licenses for Results from CDI if holdings are associated with a license

   For Primo VE search results, display the license for results obtained from the CDI. Primo already displays the license terms of results obtained from Alma holdings. License terms are displayed next to a Primo VE result that is from an institution’s Alma holding if the Alma holding has a license assigned to it (shown in the Electronic Collection Editor’s General tab in Alma), but the license is not currently displayed when Primo VE search results are obtained from the CDI for the same holding (that does have a license assigned to it.). This would benefit ILL staff who rely on license terms displayed in Primo to know if they can lend items.

5. Have the sort order for libraries affect the pickup location order in Primo

   There is currently a library sort order in Discovery for Primo VE. Our wish was to have the main campus appear first and then the branches. However we discovered that while we have options to try sorting by IP or by a custom order, this configuration does not apply to the request screen - pickup location order. We confirmed this with a ticket, and develop noted that only the alphabetical order applies to this area. We believe, it would be helpful to allow libraries with multiple libraries to put the main library at the top as that is the one that most users will select anyway.

6. Add Welsh as a supported Language for the Voice Search Assistant on Primo/PrimoVE

   Currently, Welsh is not one of the supported languages on the Voice Search Assistant on Primo/PrimoVE.

   The Voice Search Assistant does not recognise even simple words in Welsh and displays irrelevant results when testing the feature in the Sandbox environment.
   
   This means Welsh universities are excluded from using this feature for Welsh speaking users.

   Please can you add Welsh as a supported language so that Welsh speaking users can have the benefit of this feature.

7. Change how permalinks work

   The permalinks provided by Primo do not link to a specific Alma record; instead, they save the result of a search in Primo. This means that when we copy a permalink for a title included in a course, what we are doing when using it is initiating a search for that title in the recommended bibliography collection. Therefore, if that title is no longer included in a course, the permalink we had copied stops working. This is not very useful.
   We request that the permalinks provided by Primo be truly permanent and always direct to that Alma record, without changes. Or, at least, that the search launched by the permalink is always within the complete collection and never within the recommended bibliography collection.

8. Improve Primo linking to limit dead/inaccurate links

   To prevent user confusion, frustration, and access delays, we would like Ex Libris' Primo to mirror a feature that LibKey calls "Entitlement Confirmation," which would help prevent delivering dead links to end users, especially when Metadata in the CDI is lacking or incorrect.

   Delays between publishing and availability, especially with third-party databases (like EBSCOHost), happen often and can vary in length due to the nature of aggregation. The proposed change would confirm if content is available before indicating to end users that it is. This saves user and staff time and effort, streamlining the process and managing expectations while providing exemplary service.

9. "Library" sort for Network Zone participants

   Primo searches for Network Zone participating libraries can be configured to include NZ-linked records that are not held by a user's home library/institution. In these types of searches, non-available content is often ranked above available content (see "problematic ranking" screenshot). Users can use facets and/or different search profiles to just see what is available at their home library. We'd like for there to be something of a compromise between these two extremes (getting buried in non-available content vs only seeing available content). It would be something akin to the "Library" sort available to WorldCat Discovery users, where available content would be ranked more heavily and float to the top, but non-available content would still be present in search results just in case there is not much held content that is relevant. I see this being a sort option that users can select, but I would also happily accept a configuration setting that applies this sorting logic for all searches at an institution.
   In the"wc ranking" screenshot, you can see one approach to solve this: a "Library" sort option which floats held content to the top but doesn't exclude non-held content altogether (non-held content of equal search relevance is simply ranked lower). The Ex Libris solution to this doesn't have to be a copy of what WorldCat does, this is just one illustration of how to approach this problem.

10. Resource Types set in an Institution Zone should overwrite those set in a Network Zone

    The definition of the local resource type depends on the owner of the record.
    If the record is owned by IZ - the definition will be taken from the IZ.
    If the record is owned by NZ - the definition will be taken from the NZ.
    If the record is linked to NZ - the definition will be taken from the NZ.

    This is inconvenient if some of the institutions in a consortium, but not all, want the general r.type.
    Typically, the majority of the data is owned or linked to the NZ.

    The current situation does greatly reduce flexibility in a consortia where individual campuses may want to configure resource types to address local needs in a different way than the greater consortia.

12. Publish the algorithm to create permalinks

    Currently the permalinks in Primo contain a secret key which customers can't generate programatically. Using a secret key at all in a URL that is a permalink is questionable.

    • Permalinks that are dependent on internal secrets and operational details are not in the spirit of nature of long-term commitment.

    • Permalinks that can't be programatically created based on public available data are also very hard to debug and integrate with external services.

    • Permalinks should not be dependent on any operational details (for which no long-term commitment can be guaranteed).

    Publish the algorithm how this secret key can be calculated or make the key optional (when no key is provided or is empty display a default view)

13. Ability to configure the Update Password option in My Library Card by user type

    We have both internal and external users in Alma. We want to display the option to Update Password to internal users who have their passwords stored in Alma and hide the option for external users who are authenticated via SSO and cannot update passwords via Alma. However at the moment it shows for all users, which is confusing to external users who cannot use this functionality.

14. Ensure that CZ & CDI Metadata is Linked Data Ready

    I was advised by the Linked Data Group to post this idea here because I submitted the following for the LOD Working Group webinar in December:

    Broader strategic and commercial alliances required to ensure that data is ready to be linked?

    To engender confidence in CZ and make it linked-data ready, why don’t the Company do business with e.g. Backstage Library Works for authority control clean-up and maintenance?

    Metadata is a global commodity so all stakeholders have responsibility for creating, sharing, enriching and maintaining it, and of course there are costs for all of these elements which we could share.

    Isn’t this the best way to ease the burden on libraries and leverage our metadata improvements for mutual and sustainable benefit?

    I note that this document alludes to the Company taking a lead in creating a new open metadata platform and preserved data in an open format.

    Preserving metadata is not the same thing as maintaining it because metadata evolves e.g. authorities are deleted, changed and new ones created.

    In light of this I would ask that the Company explore strategic commercial partnerships to ensure that any metadata that they manage (knowledgebases, platforms) is properly maintained.

15. Allow patrons to submit ratings on records

    We would like our (identified) patrons to be able to add a rating on each record, for example on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. This rating would be saved and displayed to all users on the full display of the record. A facet would be then allow to select records according to their rating.

16. Allow suppression of GES based on Primo View

    Currently a GES (General Electronic Service) link can be suppressed or shown based on certain characteristics of the record or though Alma Display Logic Rule, through characteristics of the logged in user or presence / absence of other GES links. We would like the ability to control the display of GES links based on the current Primo view. This would allow us to show or suppress links in certain Primo views before asking the user to login.

17. Ahead of print articles

    I would love to see some regulations or procedure set in place for articles not yet published from being published in primo. I understand this is a vastly complex issue but curious if anyone else has had these issues as well and ideas on the topic.

    Ex Libris's goal is to reflect the provider’s content and metadata and cannot directly make changes in our databases without the provider making these changes. If the provider has sent us a record for an article that is not yet published, or not yet assigned to a specific volume/issue, you will see it as a search result on CDI, but the availability indication and/or linking behavior will not always work correctly.

    I would love to see some regulations or procedure set in place for articles not yet published from being published in primo. I understand this is a vastly complex issue but curious if anyone else has had these issues as well and ideas on the topic.

18. A function for academics to easily check a reference list for AI gen imaginary references

    Allow academics to cut and paste references from a student assignment to be alerted to potential 'imaginary' references created by GenAI tools.

    It's currently possible to check each reference individually but a way to provide a set of references to Primo and get a report of what is probably real and probably not real (worthy of digging deeper) would be of some assistance to academics navigating assessment challenges in an AI world.

    I don't intend anything punitive from this - I see this as part of the educational journey of a student in learning academic integrity.

19. Make databases categories field distinguished by institution also for searching

    In consortial environment, if the label of a database category assigned in IZ A for a database AAA is the same in IZ B but for another database BBB, this database BBB is also found in IZ A.
    Using different local extensions per each IZ doesn't help.
    As categories usually are defined with generic names that are used in several IZs, this funtionality is not usable as is in consortial environment.

20. Quicklink display options on full record

    In Primo VE, any quicklinks associated with records show both at the top of the full record display and in the Links section of the record. CSS can be used to hide quicklinks from the Links section, but often results in a blank Links section on the record.

    It would be helpful to have options to show quicklink at the top of the full record display, but hide them from the Links section. This would help improve the usefulness of the Links section of the record.
