Allow externally hosted IIIF manifests to be added to Alma records for display in Primo Universal Viewer
Hi there - can you allow externally hosted International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) manifests to be added to Alma records for display in Primo Universal Viewer?
The documentation indicates you can use IIIF with Alma - https://developers.exlibrisgroup.com/alma/integrations/digital/almadigital/access/ - but, in fact, Ex Libris has clarified with our institution that IIIF only works if you use internal, Alma-D manifests. Ex Libris has said: "We looked into this and got some clarification on how IIIF manifests work in Alma. There is no option to ‘enter IIIF manifests into Alma’. Instead, Alma generates its own IIIF manifests, on the fly, from Alma bibs and representations. Alma’s Universal Viewer implementation will only deliver these manifests. This functionality requires an Alma-D subscription. Without an Alma-D subscription, your best bet will be to add permalinks to your 856 fields as you noted earlier.”
We will continue using 856 fields to link to our digital collections permalinks, but this will not serve our users navigating Primo results. The way IIIF functions in Alma is not very interoperable. Can you please allow externally hosted IIIF manifests to be displayed in Primo's Universal Viewer?
Many thanks!

Hi Daniel - yes please! If you can connect me with other folks that have embedded externally hosted IIIF manifests in Primo that would be great - my email is kelli.babcock@utoronto.ca.
I've also been posting about this topic in the IIIF Slack channel, where others may be interested in documentation around examples adding external IIIF manifests for display in Primo - http://bit.ly/iiif-slack
Take care,

Hi,
Thank you for your idea. As described by support, Alma provides IIIF support for content stored in Alma Digital. Several institutions have embedded links to external IIIF manifests in Primo, eg https://library.nga.gov/discovery/fulldisplay?docid=alma994117781504896&context=L&vid=01NGA_INST:IMAGE&lang=en&adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine
Please let me know if you would like me to put you in touch with a relevant institution to hear further details.
Thanks,
Daniel
