Separate local requests from resource sharing requests in block preferences
At present, there is no way to separate local requests from resource sharing requests for the “Item is on expired hold shelf for another patron” block preference configuration.
If front desk staff attempt to check out an item to the wrong patron by mistake, this lack of separation between request types results in an undesirable outcome—a resource sharing item being checked out to the wrong patron! To cite a recent case: because 'Handle Automatically' was enabled for that block, the fulfillment request was cancelled. However, when the system then evaluated the second block, “Item is bound to a borrowing request for another patron,” the fulfillment request had already been cancelled, so no additional block was applied.
Current functionality is insufficient to accomplish a block of resource sharing materials only. Although it’s technically possible to change the settings for items “on expired hold shelf for another patron” from “Handle Automatically” to “Block,” we can’t be so granular as to block only resource sharing requests. If we made this change, it would also block the checkout of self-owned items on the expired hold shelf, which isn’t something we want to do.
