How can we improve Summon?

  1. add "film review" content type

    Summon has a "book review" content type, but no "film review" content type.
    There is no intuitive way to find film reviews, which may be tagged as "book review." This can be confusing when searching for reviews of a book that was made into a movie.

  2. Display all 300 subfields as the default for all media

    Make display of all subfields from the 300 physical description field the default in Summon for all types of materials, in the catalog detail screen, results screens, and elsewhere. Currently, Summon only displays 300 MARC physical description information for books in search results and catalog detail pages; and even for books, only subfield “a” (pagination) is included.   4. Ability to default exclude ebook chapters from search results

    I would like the ability to exclude ebook chapters from Summon search results via Summon Admin > Refine Your Search like with the Exclude Newspaper Articles Enabled function.

  5. Lengthy Topic Explorer

    The current Topic Explorer is so lengthy, possible to shorten it?
    The whole page look very wordy.

    It would be good if we can add the logo of the resource also.

  6. "Littel Navigator" for Topic Explorer

    "Littel Navigator" is a discovery support tool which is used in libraries in Japan. With it, user can check the conceptual relations between search words and other related words. The ralations are presented like network diagram.
    It would be helpful for users to expand their knowledge, if it can be integrated into Topic Explorer in Summon result page.

  7. Index the Journal of Clinical Ethics at the article level

    I've been receiving reports from users that note linking to specific articles in the Journal of Clinical Ethics via Summon is currently problematic. The article links in Summon will bring users to the latest issue of appropriate journal, but not to the article specified.

    Here’s four examples that have been noted:
    De Vries, RG, Paruchuri, Y, Lorenz, K & Vedam, S (2013) Moral Science: Ethical Argument and the Production of Knowledge about Place of Birth, Journal of Clinical Ethics, 24:3, 225-38.

  8. Let 360 Link make use of the EBSCO API

    Have 360 Link make use of the EBSCO API, which would allow 360 Link to do a 'pre-check' for article availability and suppress the full text link if the EBSCO API returns an unavailable status. This EBSCO API option is a feature currently available in Alma but not yet available in 360 Link. It would be great if Summon could take advantage of this API too.

  9. Take "Language" field information from 546 and not 041

    Please take information for the “Language” field in Summon and the Alma Display Services page from the 546 language note bibliographic field, instead of the 041 language codes bibliographic field. The 546 language note contains more detailed information about the languages included in a resource than the 041, including whether they’re for subtitles, described video, summaries as opposed to full articles, translations, etc. The current information in the Language display is not helpful for patrons.   10. Add sorting functionality to the Summon Course Reserves Citation List Display

    When Alma Course Reserves lists are displayed in Summon, there does not appear to be any order to the citations listed, making it very hard for patrons to find the citation they are looking for in that course. We would like to see the option added to determine the default sort of the display (alphabetical by title, alphabetical by author, date added, etc) AND the ability for users to resort the list themselves if the default sorting doesn't suit their needs.

    Some databases have an option to sort results by citation counts. This function is also beneficial for Summon user. In fact, I have received requests for this function from some of end users .

  12. Link author headings from different sources in Summon

    We want to link author headings from different sources in Summon.

    Currently, we have two styles of author headings appearing in Summon. One set comes from the bibliographic records in our local catalogue and is based on Library of Congress name authority headings (i.e. surname, first names, date of birth). The other set comes from the records in our institutional repository and uses Dublin Core (i.e. surname, initials).

    We do not want to change the data input style for either system as both headings are equally valid.

    I would like if possible to match & merge records from different sources: Library Catalog and Institution Repository (Dspace) to have only 1 record in Summon with 2 availability options.

  14. Customize Content Type facet to display content from specific publications

    We received the following request from a teaching librarian today:

    Is it possible for all of the articles in the publication Government Finance Review to show up under the Trade Publications limiter in Summon?

    It seems like it would be a good feature to make this customizable at the institution level.

  16. Make Institutional Google Scholar content searchable within Summon

    It would be great to see Summon integrated with Google Scholar, allowing for our institution's Google Scholar content to be searchable within Summon.

    This would eliminate many access issues that stem from users searching for open-access content that we either don't get from our providers, or that hasn't been indexed yet.

  17. Show DVD covers in search results

    Summon should show DVD covers as well as book covers in search results.

    Syndetics (and other content providers) have DVD content and covers available but this does not display in Summon. Summon should send EAN and UPC numbers to Syndetics as well as ISBNs to enhance the search results with DVD information.

  18. Fix book review linking

    There's no consistent format for book review titles appearing in various periodicals. Across the Summon index, one sees entries like:

    • {author name} {book title}
    • {book title}
    • Review: {book title}

    and all manner of different combinations of these elements. Unfortunately, OpenURL linking to destination databases fails unless both sources agree upon the format of the title. Summon describes book review titles one way and it might match some databases, many it will not. Links from Summon to ProQuest databases don't even work consistently (see attachment).

    Summon needs an approach superior to naive OpenURL linking or poorly formed searches using title metadata.…

  19. ability to disable message for the public display of A&I "not available"

    Allow library to choose whether to display or not display the "not available
    " message

    Can this portion of the A&I Detail page be configurable - while useful for the librarians, not so great a recommendation for the public, telling them all the places where their article isn't available.

  20. Feedback form - allow it to "move on the page"

    When you click on the Feedback form, allow it to "move on the page" so that you can see "under" and around it - data sometimes is blocked by the rigid display and then you have to open another window in another browser to get around the feedback display. Also does not work well in a 2-monitor situation where I would expect to be able to "move" the feedback form to a second monitor to continue cutting and pasting on the summon display in the first monitor
