  1. Update Summon Citation Generator to Current Editions

The citation generator in Summon is not using the most current style guides. In particular, we are most concerned about APA, AMA, and MLA. We request that those are updated to the most current versions and the Knowledge Center article updated accordingly. Thanks!

  2. Display all 5xx note fields as the default in Summon

Make display of all 5xx note fields the default in Summon in the Catalog Detail page, results screen and elsewhere. These fields already appear in Primo, with various labels (General note for 500, Language note for 546, Awards note for 586, Bibliography for 504, etc.). With these omitted from Summon, patrons are missing vital, helpful information from bibliographic records, such as: accessibility features for patrons with disabilities (532, 546); detailed language information--not just the languages themselves, but whether they’re for subtitles, described video, certain articles in anthologies, etc. (546); awards won for picture books, Academy Award winning movies, etc. (586);…

  3. Include "Research Guides" as one of the available Content Types in the advanced search.

This was prompted by Alan Cockerill's suggestion in the Summon mailing list for limiting search results to libraries LibGuides by using the "Research Guides" content type. It can be done via post-search faceting, but the advanced search form doesn't show "Research Guides" as a checkbox option for content types. It'd be nice to see that there.

  4. Add OSCOLA as a referencing output option

We have a Law school who use OSCOLA (https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/research-subject-groups/publications/oscola) as their referencing style.
Would any other Summon users find it helpful if this referencing style could be added to the output options?

  5. Set up ‘search within’ functionality for ProQuest One Literature in Summon

Would it be possible to set up 'search within' functionality in Summon for the One Literature database? I understand that this is not currently possible at present so have been recommended to suggest this via the Ideas Exchange.

This was included as part of the User Interface improvements in the December 2021 Summon Quarterly Release.

Institutions can now add the following fields to their advanced search page: Call Number, ISBN, ISSN, CODEN. Dewey, DOI, OCLC Number, Patent Number, EAN, EBSCOAN, ERIC, ISMN, LCC, NAICS, ORCID, PCID, PMID, PQID, PQPubID, SSID, UPC, DUNS, and SICI.

  7. Apply Open Access Indicator only when link in search result is open access

Because article-level linking is not yet available for some open access databases, Summon is providing links in to non-open access sources while displaying the Open Access Indicator which is confusing for those searching Summon without the credentials for accessing licensed resources. Example: http://tinyurl.com/yd6qc22w Levasseur, T. J. (2012). THE ENVIRONMENT CONTAINS NO "RIGHT" AND "LEFT": NAVIGATING IDEOLOGY, RELIGION, AND VIEWS OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN SOCIETY. Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies, 11(33), 62-88.

Either include in the Summon result a link to the open access database where a publication is available open access, or remove the Open…

  8. Ability to exclude a facet value on the results page

At present you can only exclude a facet value by going into the "More" option. For example the Book Review content type is probably not that useful. So it would be ideal if the was a way to exclude them when the results are displayed. The default action when clicking on the Book Review content type would be to just include this type.
This is something available in Primo and would be a great addition to Summon.

  9. Allow facet for "Online" (electronic) vs "In the Library" (physical)

A simple facet that helps users distinguish between electronic materials online and physical materials in the library.
Using the current "Refine your Search" facet for this purpose feels problematic: "Full text online" feels jargony in our context and also isn't intuitive that it would include non-textual electronic resources such as streaming audio and video, while "Library Catalog" feels similarly jargony and includes electronic records that exist in our catalog. This facet also includes other options that are valuable, but in the facet I am proposing simplicity in having only those two options would be ideal.

Included in the May 2021 release, with an update in the June 2021 maintenance release. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can activate the facets (Physical Book Processing) in your Summon site, then preview the results on your preview site after a search index update (usually within 7 days).

  11. Add Unpaywall database to the Summon index

Unpaywall is a service which harvests Open Access content directly from over 50,000 repositories. It's rapidly becoming the leading source of information about legal OA content across the web.

Unpaywall offer a 'database snapshot', a complete dump of everything we know about every Open Access DOI that exists.

I think it would be a great idea for Summon to incorporate this data in its index. It would allow a much greater level of direct linking to Open Access content for all Summon users.

(It's already possible to integrate Unpaywall's API with 360link for individual, article-by-article requests.)

  13. Fields 530 and 550^i not displaying in Summon for records from Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (database F1W)

I would like to propose that the default settings for the content type=Government document record to be changed. Currently, the default "brief" view does not include the volume/Issue data for content type=government documents. Instead, the Issue field data is located in the Preview section and the client would need to know to click on the Preview button in order to see the volume/issue number. This is not user-friendly or obvious to clients. In particular, this is not working for the display of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstract records.

  14. export search results

It would be helpful if users could export an entire set of search results without first having to send them to the folder one by one. If it's too complicated to engineer a way to "select all" with any quantity of results, perhaps just being able to "select and export all" when there are fewer than 100 results would be of some use.

  18. Ability to remove the long URL when exporting from Summon to RefWorks

When bibliographic data is exported from Summon into RefWorks the Summon link is included.

Is it possible to not include this link for books specifically?
Or to have an option to exclude the link.

Currently they look like this: and as you can imagine this does not look good in a bibliography (We have to tell students to remove the links, which is far from ideal)

Completed partially as part of the 2022 Advanced Search update for Summon. Library Location is now available as an option on the Advanced Search form.

For Genre, you can still search that as an option at the top of the Advanced Search form, but it is not available in a similar format as Library Location.
