  1. Provide the ability to separate books and ebooks when searching.

Currently, we cannot search print books only. We can separate ebooks/books if we want ebooks only be either selecting the full text limiter or the electronic books subject limiter. However, we can't do the same for print (hard copy books).

  2. Add 'date last updated' to database details

In the Data Management section of Serials Solutions, it would be useful if the database details screen displayed when the metadata was last updated for each database. This could be accomplished by having a 'date last updated' field in the database details screen.

This would be helpful for finding out how current the database's included titles, URLs, etc. are in the knowledgebase.

  3. Add Unpaywall database to the Summon index

Unpaywall is a service which harvests Open Access content directly from over 50,000 repositories. It's rapidly becoming the leading source of information about legal OA content across the web.

Unpaywall offer a 'database snapshot', a complete dump of everything we know about every Open Access DOI that exists.

I think it would be a great idea for Summon to incorporate this data in its index. It would allow a much greater level of direct linking to Open Access content for all Summon users.

(It's already possible to integrate Unpaywall's API with 360link for individual, article-by-article requests.)

  4. Allow facet for "Online" (electronic) vs "In the Library" (physical)

A simple facet that helps users distinguish between electronic materials online and physical materials in the library.
Using the current "Refine your Search" facet for this purpose feels problematic: "Full text online" feels jargony in our context and also isn't intuitive that it would include non-textual electronic resources such as streaming audio and video, while "Library Catalog" feels similarly jargony and includes electronic records that exist in our catalog. This facet also includes other options that are valuable, but in the facet I am proposing simplicity in having only those two options would be ideal.

Included in the May 2021 release, with an update in the June 2021 maintenance release. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can activate the facets (Physical Book Processing) in your Summon site, then preview the results on your preview site after a search index update (usually within 7 days).

  5. Add search history and allow searching with sets from the search history

Filter options and relevance ranking is one way to search, explore and discover, but it has limitations. To combine previous searches is standard in all kind of bibliographic and full text databases and would be a true enhancement. Most professional information specialists lack confident in search systems that only rely on filter and relevance ranking. Give us boolean search using sets from the search history!

  6. Making available a list of the resources indexed in Summon Index

It would be great to have an up-to-date list of what is in the Summon Index. Or have a new column in the Center Center for each database, indicating if it is in the Index or not.
Today, when we select a database as "subscribed" in the Client Center, we are not sure whether this database is in the Summon Index or not. So we have to check in Summon by clicking "Add results beyond your library's collection" and see what shows up in the results. This is tedious.

  7. Add public note text to Summon results

Display public note text onSummon results to show users access restrictions or special instructions that users should be aware of before clicking on an eResource link. This same info on the preview pane may be an option.

  8. Integrate LibGuides Database A-Z list into Summon search

We add all our databases and library resources as Best Bets so that users can find them when they search Summon. This doesn't work particularly well as the Best Bets search and display functionality is minimal.

We also maintain a complete Database A-Z list in LibGuides. It would save staff time and provide a better user experience if these could be indexed in Summon using the LibGuides API (as our LibGuides are indexed in Summon), instead of relying on Best Bets which isn't suited to this task.

  9. Add the option to force Summon to load over https

In October, Google Chrome release 62 will begin labeling any website loaded over http and containing a form (i.e. every library webpage ever) as "Not Secure." You can read more about that here: https://security.googleblog.com/2017/04/next-steps-toward-more-connection.html

We currently have all our links to and search forms use HTTPS to access Summon, but we can't force all our users onto HTTPS. Since the *.summon.serialssolutions.com wildcard certificate covers every instance of Summon, why not add an option to force all Summon connections to use HTTPS? (Or just make it the default.)

While you're at it, why not add your exlibrisgroup wildcard certificate to your…

  10. Add option to force 360 Link to load over HTTPS

In October, Google Chrome release 62 will begin labeling any website loaded over http and containing a form (i.e. every library webpage ever) as "Not Secure." You can read more about that here: https://security.googleblog.com/2017/04/next-steps-toward-more-connection.html

We currently route traffic from Summon and other services we control to 360Link over HTTPS, but we can't force all our users onto HTTPS (especially those coming from Google Analytics). Since the *.search.serialssolutions.com wildcard certificate covers every instance of 360 Link, why not add an option to force all connections to use HTTPS? (Or just make it the default.)

  12. Distinguish between author and editor in Summon results and citations

Before RDA, catalogue records did not clearly distinguish between the author and editor of a work, so Summon could not do this either. We would like Summon results and citations to separate author and editor, where this is possible. This would be particularly helpful when exporting citations to reference manager software such as RefWorks. Currently editors are always imported into the author field. This has caused our users problems as it means their references are inaccurate, unless they notice the problem and manually fix it.

In RDA, terms such as author and editor can be added to the names given…

  14. Make Link Out(Summon Direct Linking) statistics of each database available in OBI

We would like to be able to see the click-through (or call it Link Out) usage of each database via Summon IEDL in Summon OBI and the total click-throughs so that we can understand how Summon contributes to the usage of the e-resources we subscribe to.

  15. Make Open Access facet statistics available in OBI

It would be great to be able to look at usage stats for Open Access facet(s) in Summon searches. Since the "Is Open Access" facet is already available in the OBI interface, it makes sense for this functionality to be added to the enhancement list. Considering that Open Access materials are becoming more important globally, and in our library we are looking into raising the profile of our Open Access resources in general, being able to report on statistics would be great for us.

  17. Don't limit search results to 200 items

Don't limit search results to 200 items. Many students use Summon as part of their literature review strategy to gather information for dissertations. Removing the limit of only 200 results being returned would allow users to get a far more accurate picture of what is available to them from the literature they are reviewing.

  18. In search results, make the journal title a link that takes you to a "Search Within the Journal" search page

This would be similar to clicking on the author name to find additional articles by that author, but with the added "search within" capability.
