  1. Improvements to manage larger sets of volatile Best Bets

To manage Best Bets more rigourously I would offer this additional functionality:
    a) Export all current best bets to Excel (Much simpler to manage and check for currency outside of admin interface)

    b) Provide a way to mark all existing Best Bets for deletion with one click so that the updated spreadsheet (from point a) can be imported to Summon without requiring every existing Best Bet to marked for deletion to prevent duplications.

  2. Summon Advanced Search for Courses and Instructors

It would be great to have "instructor" and "course" fields as an advanced search for patrons via Summon/Alma, as we currently offer that option as part of Voyager.

In 2018, in addition to the instructor and course facets in Summon/Alma, we added the ability to browse or search by instructor or course. This can be found on a separate course reserves page via a tab at the top of the Summon search results page.

The page lists all courses by default, but these can be filtered down by typing in your search term.

  3. Indicate when content is freely available (but not tracked)

When searching with 'add results beyond your library's collection' ticked, all non-tracked content is labelled 'Citation Only'. However some of this content is in fact freely available, for example lots of content in institutional repositories.

Summon should have a way to indicate that content may be freely available even when not tracked, for content in non-tracked open access journals or open repositories. If it's too difficult for Summon to know when something is available, maybe we could have a third label (other than 'full text online' and 'citation only') for content from repositories where there is a high probability of…

  4. In search results, make the journal title a link that takes you to a "Search Within the Journal" search page

This would be similar to clicking on the author name to find additional articles by that author, but with the added "search within" capability.

  6. Relevancy rankings

Change relevancy rankings to push articles above books and e-books (or at least not favor books). Most Summon users want articles more than books.

  7. Add option to force 360 Link to load over HTTPS

In October, Google Chrome release 62 will begin labeling any website loaded over http and containing a form (i.e. every library webpage ever) as "Not Secure." You can read more about that here: https://security.googleblog.com/2017/04/next-steps-toward-more-connection.html

We currently route traffic from Summon and other services we control to 360Link over HTTPS, but we can't force all our users onto HTTPS (especially those coming from Google Analytics). Since the *.search.serialssolutions.com wildcard certificate covers every instance of 360 Link, why not add an option to force all connections to use HTTPS? (Or just make it the default.)

  9. Make Open Access facet statistics available in OBI

It would be great to be able to look at usage stats for Open Access facet(s) in Summon searches. Since the "Is Open Access" facet is already available in the OBI interface, it makes sense for this functionality to be added to the enhancement list. Considering that Open Access materials are becoming more important globally, and in our library we are looking into raising the profile of our Open Access resources in general, being able to report on statistics would be great for us.

  10. Make "Best Bets" show up when tag keywords are present in search, not just when there's an exact match

Right now, Best Bets show up when there's an exact match on tags, e.g., our job search assistance information shows up when someone searches "jobs" or "job search," etc., but not when someone searches "how can i look for jobs," etc. (unless we anticipate every situation where that tag word might be used). Could the Best Bets be brought up whenever keywords are present in the search, not just when there's an exact match?

  11. Make new Summon Usage Statistics Dashboard publicly viewable

There is currently no way to share a dashboard of Summon usage statistics in the new "Current" interface viewable for all users within our institution. Please create a way for Summon administrators to send a publicly viewable link to others at our institution without having to make everyone log in through the Client Center.

  12. "Exact" search for certain fields

Add the functionality to do an "exact" search on certain fields. For example there are very short titles which can be search much better this way. Also signatures in the LCCallNumber field could be found much easier. We are api users (Backend Summon, Frontend VuFind) and are helping ourselves at the moment with "constructed" values for the (for example) LCCallNumber to simualte the possibility of an exact search - but this is far from optimal.

  13. Create an LTI for Summon so that it can be integrated into LMS (Canvas or others).

We want to integrate Summon into our Learning Management Ssystem (LMS) which is Canvas. The easiest way to do this is if we use an existing library service that has an LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability').

Libraries who add search option are using some kind of library LTI product. That's the only way to add something in the sidebar of a Canvas course. Our ILS/catalog does not off an LTI application for connecting it to an LMS. It would be a great improvement if Summon offered an LTI.

  14. Language selection

We have received complaints about the difficulty in changing the language on the Summon-page. It's not intuitive to have to click on the language you already see in order to get the other alternative/s. We would like the alternative you click on first to be called Change language or maybe just "language". As it is now, if I want to change language from Swedish to English, I first have to click on Swedish to get to the Language-menu and be able to chose English.

  15. Stop match and merge for client catalog records.

We suggest a fully supported, optional, product feature to stop match and merge for client catalog records.

In the result list of Summon where there are several links to resources, the titles are linked to only one resource, which most of the time is good. However when a print record from the local catalog is merged with an e-book, the link most often lead to the e-book and we have noticed that the print version of the book is very often not noticed by the user. Our library have no e-books in our local catalog so we would very much…

You can now stop match and merge for your catalog records. In the Summon Admin Console, under Content Ingestion > Catalog Merge Settings, simply drag and drop your catalog from the Include column to the Exclude column. If you have used this feature and have feedback, please send it to us!

  16. Open Access filtering and restriction

Open-access resources should not need to be selected in a library's Intota instance to reliably indicate that they are accessible to the Summon user.

Currently, when a user checks both the OA filter and the 'include outside sources' box, some resources present in results with the ambiguous message that they are open-access, but are unavailable or only obtainable via ILL (according to what text the library displays in this circumstance.) Users can't know which to believe- is it accessible or not?

Since open-access resources brought into search results come from either a library's Intota selections or the Summon index, it…

  17. Create a method for searching an exact word which does not apply corrected spelling

Create a method for searching an exact word which does not apply corrected spelling. Sometimes there are specific words that are not "normal" spelling which get change to variants and the term you are looking for disappears within a sea of results.

e.g. frocta - a latin word gets changed to frota

and you get 18,000 results - none of them the word we searched upon.

  18. Add Chicago Notes-Bibliography Style as an option for the citation generator.

Chicago Notes-Bibliography (NB) style is the preferred citation style for historians, but Chicago Author-Date is the only option available in the automatic citation generator in Summon. As the formats are noticeably different, it would be useful to have both options available for users to choose from.

  19. Making available a list of the resources indexed in Summon Index

It would be great to have an up-to-date list of what is in the Summon Index. Or have a new column in the Center Center for each database, indicating if it is in the Index or not.
Today, when we select a database as "subscribed" in the Client Center, we are not sure whether this database is in the Summon Index or not. So we have to check in Summon by clicking "Add results beyond your library's collection" and see what shows up in the results. This is tedious.
