Keep chosen UI language after login
At the moment, following login, the Primo UI changes to either
a) preferred UI user language as indicated in the user preferences, or
b) default language
This leads to odd situations, for example,
User changes UI (from German) to English -> everything is now in English
Does a search etc etc -> still in English
Logs in - Login etc window in English
After successful login, the user is returned to Primo... but in German!
This is inexplicable for the user, and unless they know about preferences, and where to set them, it happens every time.
Note to change preferences the English user must dio all of the above, then change the UI back into English again, choose Account, choose Personal Details & Settings, and then Default Language.
Our (admittedly) anecdotal experience is, that English speaking user seldom change the UI language preferences, probably because it is so well hidden.
Our suggestion is that the currently chosen UI language be taken into account, as the the most recent and definitive expression of the user preferences, possibly the only one.

This is important for us: we would like our users to see Primo in their preferred language when they log in.

Hi James,
We have the same problem. Our Primo is in Catalan, Spanish and English. When the patron logs in it change in Catalan.
We have the preferred language in Alma patron record. Do you have this information?
I think that Primo must respect the Preferred Language in Alma's patron record o the language that patron select in Primo's preferences.Do you think that could be an option show Primo VE in the Alma's Preferred Language, not the view default language?
Regards,
Francesc

When you mention "interface language in account settings", you should distinguish between a default setting and one that has been actively set by the patron. My experience is that very few patrons a) know that this setting exists and still less b) actively select the option they require. This experience is based on the long path necessary to reach this option - relatively few patrons even know about it I suspect - , and on the low usage of the personal settings in general - according to the stats only about 1 in 10 patrons who use the account functions, visit the personal setiings screen.
The use case seems clear to me in the cited example. If a patron changes the UI to English, and then logs in, he/she shouldn't have to change it back to English again, and/or attempt to find/be expected to know that this is a setiing hidden deep in the account details. One (smart) possibility would be, that Primo asks "do you wish to change your default language?", and does it as required, with a reference to where it is done ("you can change it at any time in account/settings" or similar)
At the moment it is simply baffling. -

I do not agree, sorry.
When I can change the interface language in my account settings I 100% expect the interface to change to that language when I log in.
Otherwise you'd have to remove the choice from my account settings.---
> Our suggestion is that the currently chosen UI language be taken into account, as the
> the most recent and definitive expression of the user preferences, possibly the only one.But that would lead to the following situation:
– I change the language to English without being logged in
– I do _not_ have the possibility to set the language in my account
– Language stays English for this sessionOn another day, I follow the link to the catalog from the library's website, and they explicitly link to the German interface, for whatever reason.
Or I'm on a public computer in the library, which has the default language set to German.
As my interface language is now German again, this gets set as the language for my account.
---
I understand the other case you describe, though:
- my browser is set to English or I changed the Primo language to English without logging in
- I log in and my language switches to German because that is the default setting before I change it in my account.> seldom change the UI language preferences, probably because it is so well hidden
I agree with that part.
For example, when I'm logged in, instead of just
"Interface Language: English"
there could be a radio button choice of the available languages, right there in the pulldown menu of the account settings.---
