How can we improve Primo?

  1. Secondary sorting of records in the results list

    Primo is designed to sort the results list by one parameter only (relevancy, title etc.).
    Currently, it is not possible to define a secondary sort. Thus records with the same ranking will appear in no particular order.
    It would be beneficial to be able to configure a secondary and third sort options. For example, first sorting by Relevancy, secondary by Publishing Year and third by Title.

  2. Export search results to Excel (or delimited file)

    When a user gets several hundred search results, they would like to be able to download a list of the entire search results. This is a feature that faculty routinely use. They may then have a faculty assistant check out some of the books.

    There is no way in Primo to capture an entire set of search results and do anything with it, such as export.

    The ability to export a set of search results was a feature in the Aleph OPAC. There is no feature parity in Primo. Users have already noted the lack of this feature.

  3. Make facets sticky by default for the session

    I would like to suggest that Primo's facets should be sticky by default (or at least that this should be a configuration option). The "Reset filters" link right below the selected filters implies that filters will stick unless reset; users find this confusing. I agree with other posters' points about the lock icon being visible at all times, and that a selection of New Search should automatically clear sticky facets, but otherwise, I would like to propose that facets should stick unless the user either selects New Search, or clicks "Reset filters" (perhaps this could be renamed "Clear filters").   4. New UI: Set automatically the cursor in the search box

    Hello,

    A feature that many users would like to see in the Primo new UI is to have the cursor already in the search box when they open the page. The user would be able to type directly their query and not have to click first in the search box. In the Primo classic UI, the cursor was already in the search box.

    The SF case 00508525 was about the same issue.

    Thank you for posting this suggestions. We are checking if this is the right behavior in terms of accessibility. (How will the user be familiar with the main menu options if the focus is on search box ? )

  5. Add "Back to results list" when a document has several editions

    We would like to propose an improvement to the search results for end-users in Primo. Our suggestion is to have an easier way to get back to the search results list if a document has several editions.
    Currently, if a user opens a document that has several editions/versions, they have to reset their active search filters (“List of editions/versions”) in order to go back their original search results list. Our suggestion is to have a button that says “Back to results list” instead.

  6. Less duplicate records in Primo Central Index results

    Primo Central grouping is based on the existing FRBR workflow, including the grouping process at the database level (the way the Search engine handles grouping) and the Front End functionality. It is used to prevent duplicate records in the results list.

    Unfortunately, many records are not added to FRBR groups because the system considers the metadata are not rich enough. With the increase of records provided by (Open Access) aggregators and repositories, the number of duplicate records will certainly not decrease.

    Could Ex Libris improve the FRBR workflow for Primo Central records in order to reduce the number of duplicate…

  7. Review content type in Primo is confusing

    Currently the Review content type in Primo / Primo Central seems to contain both Book Reviews such as

    and Review Articles such as

    It would be better if these were in separate content types.

  8. warning message when unpinning a record from the favorites page

    It would be very useful if upon clicking on the unpin icon in the favorites screen, Primo will display a warning message stating that the user is about to delete the marked record/s.
    Currently, clicking willingly or inadvertently on the unpin icon will immediately and irreversibly delete the record/s.

  9. Adding 'Issue' as a new resource type in Primo Central

    Resource types used in Primo Central are limited to 23 (book, article, journal, image...) [See pdf "Primo Central Index Resource Types" in the Documentation Center].

    For digitized journal issues, the type in use is 'journal'. Archive collections like HathiTrust may contain tens of thousands of digitized journal issues; institutional repositories may also contain complete issues… This is finally confusing for end-users for who see issues labelled as journals and for whom filtering by resource type has become useless.

    Adding a 24th type 'Issue' for this material would be welcome! ‘Journal’ would thus only remain for real journal records.

  10. • Records without a date at the bottom of results list when sorting on date oldest

    At this moment, the sort option “Date oldest” displays the records without a date on top of the results list. This is confusing and not relevant for users; when there are several records without a Creation Date they probably conclude that sorting on date oldest doesn’t work. Our request is to display the records without a date always at the bottom of the results list when a sort option on date is used (thus as well for date oldest as for date newest)

  12. Display of earlier editions in 'View x versions' feature instead of latest ones

    Unfortunately, and I've noticed this with other titles in Primo, e.g. Begg Economics, the latest editions of titles are hidden in the 'View x versions' area of Primo while the earliest edition is displayed in the search results. It would be better perhaps if the latest edition displayed with the option to view earlier editions under the 'View x versions' feature.

  13. Analytics - advanced search stastistics

    Hi there,

    According to SF case 422111 it's currently not possible to provide detailed statistics about advanced search field through OBI.

    As for the facets, we would like to know the number of using field by field.

    For example :
    - We would like to know how many clicks were done on search field "Topic"
    - We would like to know how many clicks were done on search field "Author"
    - We would like to know in how many session the search field document type / books was used
    - Which are the fields the most used in the advanced…

  14. Ability to select/set preferred record criteria for dedupe/FRBR in Primo VE

    We have instances where records for print materials in our holdings are combined with records for e-resources, to display a single record with multiple access points in our catalog. That is good and expected. However, often the source record is an e-resource record rather than the record for our physical holding, and we would prefer that the record for our physical resource be used so that important local notes are sure to be displayed. When the record for an e-resource is used instead, our local notes are not displayed, and that is a big problem.

  15. Version control system for back office configuration

    A version control system for back office configuration tables, pipes, normalization rules etc.
    For files like Custom HTML, CSS, JS, PDS etc. we can manage change history and revert to older versions by using version control systems like Git, Subversion etc. For configuration managed via the web back office and database this is not possible, but it is a vital feature of professional system management. This will become more important in a full SaaS environment.

  16. Session Timeout Warning

    It would be most helpful if a 'Session Timeout' warning could be displayed a certain amout of time before the session actually ends. Included in the warning could be the options to 'keep me logged in' or 'log out now'.

  17. Ability to Run Blank Search with Limiters - Primo VE

    I have been asked by one of our Directors if it is possible within Primo VE to conduct a blank search, limited by material type or some other limiter, and get the full result of what is in our collection. I have not been able to figure out if there is a way to do this. She said she came from an institution that had this capability (Alma - Classic Primo), but I am not sure if that functionality is available in Primo VE.

  19. Allow users to choose how many results to see

    With a lot of online retail sites, users are able to choose how many search hits they see per page.

    Would this be a helpful addition to Primo?

    After all, since the new UI was introduced, the subject of infinite-scrolling vs paging has been contentious amongst Ex Libris customers. It has already led to the addition of the 'Next Page' widget.

    Allowing users to choose how many hits they would like to see might take a lot of the debate from us, and put the decision directly into the hands of the end user.

  20. Allow users to personalize default scope for them

    Option to allow a Primo user to select which scope they prefer to work with when multiple scopes. Two possibilities - allow this to be set for as a saved option for signed-in users only, or allow this to be set as a cookie for guest users and be saved as a cookie on that computer. This could apppear as a "Personalize" selection.

    This will truly empower users - e.g. if they don't want to see Primo Central results most of the time, they will not be hampered by the library's choice of "All" as a default scope. Or if…
