Include eBooks in Browse by Call Number Search
I would love to see eBooks (that have call numbers, of course) included in Browse by Call Number search results – or have a way to toggle their inclusion/exclusion in results. We spend a fortune on eBooks but they're excluded from this search. It seems many of our eBooks have a call number as they appear in the shelf carousel on item records.
A keyword search is enough to bring up resources for typical undergraduate assignments, but many faculty want their students to know about the information landscape of their area/field that call numbers provide. This is unquestionably important for graduate students.
We're also concerned that excluding eBooks from the search system in this way will make purchasing eBooks less appealing to our faculty. As a subject librarian, I've spent years convincing faculty about the great benefits of eBooks. We've made great progress there, and of course the pandemic forced many to accept the utility of ebooks, especially when I can buy unlimited concurrent user licenses for books, enabling faculty to use them for course readings.
I'm grateful for the browse carousel in the lower part of each item record. It shows our print and eBooks together in a virtual browse, but that little panel is hard to use compared to a results list a “browse by call number” search yields.
Anyone else out there think this is useful? Thanks!
