DataCite integration with research resources (equipment)
Esploro currently supports landing pages for research resources (such as equipment, instruments, and facilities), which is a great step toward improving visibility and discoverability. However, these resources are not yet integrated with Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) like DOIs, which are increasingly required under national and international PID strategies (e.g., Australia’s National PID Strategy).
Assigning DOIs to research resources ensures they are treated as research objects, enabling better tracking of usage, linking to related outputs and grants, and supporting reproducibility. DataCite provides a schema for minting DOIs for resources, but Esploro lacks a direct workflow for this integration.

The Digital Science Australia National Persistent Identifier (PID) Benchmarking Toolkit has been developed in October 2025, recommending that DOIs be minted for all research equipment: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.29281667.v3
