How can we improve RefWorks?

  2. Attachments stall, never completely finish

    Many users have noticed that when PDF attachments are uploaded, they take a very long time in the processing/uploading phase, and sometimes the progress bar stalls at 50% and never finishes.

  4. Don't automatically import subject headings as tags

    Subject headings from Proquest and other databases are automatically imported as "tags." This clutters up the interface, and makes it hard for users to add their own tags.

  5. Add a ref type for "dissertation"

    There is no reference type in RefWorks for dissertations, only theses. In APA style, citations for dissertations and theses are formatted differently so RefWorks should offer an additional reference type.

  6. Save to Refworks button is not functional

    The save to refworks button for chrome is not functional. About 90% of the time when I try to use it and input all the information, the loading bar goes and goes (Uploading 1 of 1.......) and eventually after about a minute it says it was unable to import anything (We're sorry, we were unable to save to RefWorks. We tried, but came up empty.) So frustrating. As said before, this service is great, but quite a few basic functionalities are from from actually functioning properly. These need to be fixed.   7. Improve print/electronic differentiation in imported book references

    The default setting for book imports is for electronic books and it is, in my experience, not apparent to users until an inaccurate bibliography is created.

    Perhaps you could:
    A) Change the default from electronic to print
    B) Bring the 'this is an electronic resource' tick-box to the top of the screen when a user imports a book record.

  8. Make DOI field available automatically for manual reference input

    DOI field is the most important for manual reference input (journal). However it is not visible automatically and has to be added. However this has to be done each time which is very inconvenient with a large number of references. Can it be made automatically available on ref input screen or give option to select our choice of fields for this screen

  9. Improve import of author's names

    The most common problem we see with the formatting of references is that the author's first and last name are treated as one field, so that the in-text citation would read (Ali Smith, 2017) rather than (Smith, 2017). This happens quite a lot, is there a way to improve the export/importing of author's names?

  10. Set default folder

    How about a feature to set a default folder where refs are uploaded? I'm using the taskbar function to save to RefWorks and I'm required to assign the folder manually from the user interface every time.

  11. New Folder

    Importing a citation from an external source, the site asks what folder. Can you put a create folder ability on the window? The window 'pull' down that lists my current folder/location. It would be helpful to have the ability to create a new folder there. Right now, you have to go out of the import window, etc.

    Also, importing citations, the same window asking for the location. When you select a check box, the window doesn't auto close (which it should). To close your selection, you must mouse click out on the page. Then the window closes, but doesn't show…

  12. Add a ref type for "tv progamme" and/or "streamed video"

    We would like more reference type options to support users adding content from streaming platforms such as BBC iplayer and the BUFVC site Box of Broadcasts. Currently we only have the basic 'video' option which is fine for adding films which require details such as director, distribution company etc. but the information needed to reference a tv broadcast in our Cite Them RIght Harvard style is quite different. An additional reference type would allow us to configure this to accomodate both types of video content.

  15. Have the option to input n.d. for an undated article

    When trying to put n.d. into the "date" section of a reference, it just seems to think it is an incorrect input/date and will not allow for this. However, in the real world, quite a few sources from time to time are undated, and this puts a crimp in everything when you cannot put n.d. per APA format. Please add this functionality to either input our own term of n.d. or to select that the source is undated so it can be automatically entered into the reference. Thank you.

  16. Citing pre-prints in RefWorks

    There is a growing interest and use of repositories (like https://arxiv.org/) for publishing these non-peer-reviewed articles and abstracts, especially in the computer science, Physics and other engineering fields. As of today, such an option is not available in the RefWorks.

  17. ISBN/ISSN, authors can be used to retrieve auto-cite metadata for manual input

    More criteria are recommended for retrieving metadata for auto-cite. ISBN, ISSN and authors are common. This will empower the auto-cite capability and save a lot of time for the researchers.

  18. Diacritic characters

    Fix the problem diacritic characters. It was promised last year but still é or ä etc. have to be corrected manually.

  20. Import "Google Scholar" as source

    Seeing references imported from Google Scholar, its "Source Name" field is "Google". Is it possible to change it to "Google Scholar"?
