The new Notification Center allows you to set expiry dates against the alerts you now send.

Pardon my ignorance and the question posed. Would this be used for staff as well as students? I can see this being used by HR and Marketing departments for various campaigns.

Our students also have asked for the ability to set an alarm / reminder for their lecture X minutes before the lecture is due. Similar to calendar notifications when creating an event in a calendar.
