Many institutions using Rosetta manage collections that span multiple languages, whether for metadata, user interfaces, or administrative workflows. One area where users frequently run into difficulty is in handling multilingual content consistently and efficiently. Currently, Rosetta requires manual entry or external tools to manage language variants, which can be time consuming and prone to inconsistency — especially for global collections that include dozens of languages.

I’d like to propose enhancing Rosetta’s multilingual capabilities by adding built-in support for automatic translations and language fallback management within the platform itself. This would include features such as the ability to define multiple language variants for metadata fields, an integrated automatic translation option for common languages, and a system-wide setting for language preference fallback when localized content isn’t available. For example, if a French user views a record that only has English metadata, the system could automatically present a translated version or offer a one-click translation alternative.

This feature would not only help institutions with diverse language collections, but also improve the accessibility and discoverability of content for end users around the world. Allowing administrators to configure preferred languages and fallback hierarchies from within Rosetta’s UI would streamline workflows and reduce reliance on external translation tools. Ultimately, better multilingual handling would support broader community engagement and make Rosetta a more flexible solution for international digital preservation.
