How can we improve Summon?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

    Quick Look - improve the quick-look to be more flexible, including delivering the key elements (subjects, table of contents, abstract, etc.) in a "closed" position, linearly in one column, allowing the user to choose which one to see on demand. The fixed display (headed by the 1-25) does not move or actually center on screen (laptops), making the right column data extremely hard to see at the bottom right of the screen.   3. Mandatory sender e-mail field in Summon

    In summon you can email records / titles, from your search results to others via the small feature in the top right corner. Unfortunately, it is not a requirement that the sender of the email is obligatory to fill in a sender field (There is no sender field at all.)
    In principle, you can email posts / titles with associated messages in the note field anonymously!

    It also means that when we at the library receive such an e-mail, we only know who sent it if the patron added a text that helps us identify him/her.

  4. RestrictionsOnAccess

    Make access restrictions visible (MARC field 506 / mapping "RestrictionsOnAccess").
    In mapping, MARC field 506 is assigned under RestrictionsOnAccess. Unfortunately this field is not visible in Summon. For the user it would be a big advantage if the access restrictions are shown at the hits.

  5. Add Section number to Course ID in Course Reserves page

    The Course Reserves page in Summon is a nice improvement for Summon Over Alma customers. In Summon, only the Alma course code is displaying as the Course Number. In the attached example, you can see that Bio 220 has 3 sections. It is not clear in Summon which section number corresponds to which course number. Please add the section number to course number in Summon.

    Oxford is an important reference source that would add scope and value to the topic explorer.

  7. Permalink popups get in the way.

    Permalink popups on each records get in the way and hide the clear button when we bring up the permalink window.
    And when we tried to click the clear button, cursors and popups blink and do not look very good. I hope that it will be modified.

  8. Add "Include matches in Full Text" to "some suggestions to improve your search"

    It would be helpful if user can re-search by "Include matches in Full Text" on the "some suggestions to improve your search" screen that appears when there are zero results,

  11. Consistent link back to search results

    The user leaves the search result and goes to detail page, advanced search or saved items. Then when the user wants to return to search results this is done in three different ways. We would like the link back to search results look the same in all three situations. The one we prefer is the one in the detail page.

  12. Make custom panels visible for mobile phone users

    There appears to be no way for custom panels to display on mobile phones, which forces us to provide alternative instructions for doing certain things in Summon for people using phones. There should be a way for these panels to display.

  13. Ability to exclude a facet value on the results page

    At present you can only exclude a facet value by going into the "More" option. For example the Book Review content type is probably not that useful. So it would be ideal if the was a way to exclude them when the results are displayed. The default action when clicking on the Book Review content type would be to just include this type.
    This is something available in Primo and would be a great addition to Summon.

  14. Add "Council of Science Editors" (CSE) to Cite this Item options

    Faculty has requested that Council of Science Editors (CSE) formatting style be added as an option in Summon's "Cite this Item" drop-down menu.

  15. Usability of Advanced Search

    Certain elements of the advanced search screen are very difficult to use on mobile devices, particularly the 'Content type' and 'Discipline' multiple check-box options, where scrolling through a long list is problematic.
    Is there a way to improve this, perhaps by using a larger pop-out box that can be scanned at a glance?

  16. Toggle on/off for search results autoload

    Many users prefer the scroll to autoload search results. As convenient as that is, it is reportedly posing a difficulty for those who must use screen readers at our institution. They need to be able to load one page at a time. It isn't important if the citations per page is 10, 20, or some other number just as long as they can page forward and backward in the results. I would like to see a way for users to toggle on/off autoload for search results. If that is not possible, then adding a way in the admin console to…

  17. Top menu bar - Feedback, Help, Language

    Some suggestions for the top menu bar.
    - Allow enable/ disable for Feedback & Help in top menu. Currently, feedback and help are able to pointing to specific links. But not able to disable/ enable the links.
    - Move the language dropdown to the top menu, instead of under the manual button then click and select from the dropdown. It's not easy for patron to find out this option and change the language.

  18. Make it possible to construct a search box for all online material plus physical material from one location only

    At present it is possible to construct a search box which excludes all physical material from one or more library locations. Unfortunately it also excludes physical material found at both those library locations and others, when these share a bibliographical record in the LMS. Make a truly location-specific search box possible.

  19. Page feed interface for search results page

    Currently, Summon displays hidden search results by scrolling down the search results screen. It would be good if users and administrators could select "page feed type" as an interface for displaying hidden search results at their discretion.
