  1. Integrate BrowZine with Summon

When searching for a specific journal it would be nice to have a link such as ‘View latest articles from this journal’ or ‘View table of contents’ and have the latest articles display in the right pane (with a link at the bottom to view all issues) - this could be similar to how bX Recommender is integrated via the ‘Related articles’ link. This could work nicely with a service such as BrowZine.

  2. Add "Apply" button at the bottom of the facet selection window

Add another "Apply" button at the bottom of the facet section on the left of the Summon screen along with the current location (found at the top of the facet selection).

Users have a habit of not applying facets because they forget that they must apply the changes at the top. Typically most "apply" buttons are found at the bottom of filter/facet selections.

  3. Partial Summon data loads should be ingested into the index within one to two days

Instead of waiting for a weekend data load to be indexed live on Friday and weekday loads to be indexed live on wednesday, it would be best to have all partial data loads added to the index within 1 to 2 days of submission.

Improving ingestion times and other indexing processes is an ongoing target for Summon and CDI. There are a variety of components that contribute to the current timeline and our team is working on shortening the processing time for each component. Because of this interdependency, we do not have a timeline for when the overall process will be updated.

We appreciate the significance of this idea and have dedicated internal initiatives and teams to addressing this. Because of the longer term nature of this issue, we will maintain this as a priority in development but close this idea so you can apply your votes to other issues that may not have the same development resources currently.

  4. Solving the issue of Inconsistent search results and “disappearing” articles on Summon

We often find that identical searches performed on consecutive days come up with different numbers of results, and articles found when doing the search on one day don’t appear when doing the search on another day. The explanation we have been given is that it depends which server you hit with your search, but shouldn't the contents of each server be identical? This is especially problematic if you are running a workshop where students are completing a worksheet where they are asked to give numbers of results. The missing content is obviously an issue if you find something useful one…

The explanation that was given to you and that is described in this Idea Exchange entry regarding why results may change in Summon is unfortunately incomplete. Discrepancies between total counts for search results can be due to a variety of factors, including:

    1.  Time outs on individual servers: the Central Discovery Index sits on hundreds of servers, each returning results. A slow connection may result in two different queries having a result count that is one or two, or even hundreds different. This can be caused by a variety of connections between the index and the end user, and while it can be minimized, it cannot be eliminated. This would account for most of your fluctuations that occur in side by side searches.
    2. Changes in available records or content: institutions will update their subscriptions or change their catalog records, which can result in one particular resource switching from available to not.
  5. Confess too much syfy latest tech/ holographic multi display of information - data, text, and image

Too much syfy with shows of futuristic clear desk using touch tech to activate a surface screen or project a holographic screen which can then be tapped to display information in a variety of simultaneous formats... and ... uses voice recognition.
Let's do it, show it, promote it, at least encourage prototypes.
