How can we improve RefWorks?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Warning that a reference is already in Refworks when import it

I would be great, if Refworks detects duplicates while I import references. RefWorks could ask: "This is already in your RefWorks database. Do you want to import it anyway?"

    • Suggestion about de-duplicate feature

After running the duplicate checker, items that result are check-marked by default. In my view, it would be better that none of them are check-marked by default. Then the user can check-mark just the ones they want to delete, without having first to deselect all the items.

Currently the user interface and login site are hard to handle trough mobile devices.

I suggest a user interface auto adaptable to device screen (responsive)

        • Change Write-n-Cite 4.5 so that multiple authors with the same surname are distinguished by a suffix (a,b etc) on the date.

WnC 4.5 deals with authors that have the same surname differently to WnC 4.4. Our style is based on a version of Harvard and in WnC 4.4 in text citations for authors with the same surname are given the suffix of a,b etc onto the date e.g: (Smith, 2008a), (Smith, 2008b) to distinguish them. In the new version (4.5) if these authors have different initials, then that is added into the citation e.g: (A. Smith, 2008), (B. Smith, 2008).

If the citations in question have different years - then initials are added to that as well e.g: (A. Smith, 2008),…

We have fixed the fundamental issue with author initials in in-text citations. Please review and let us know if this has addressed your concerns. To see the update, please download the latest version of WnC. If the problem persists, please contact support refworks.support@exlibrisgroup.com with your account information.

          • Import filter for ICTRP (clinical trials database)

Please could you provide an import filter for .xml files of references which can be exported from the ICTRP database:
            http://www.who.int/ictrp/en/
It's free to use so it should be possible for you to obtain an .xml file with the tagged references on which to base an import filter. Clinical trials databases are searched a lot in health.

It would be useful to be able to delete tags at a top level from the master list that appears on the left hand column of RefWorks in addition to the current feature where you are able to delete tags from individual records.

              • Delete the "Search Databases" option.

Please give Administrators the power to remove this option from RefWorks. We spend a great deal of time teaching students how to use our library's federated search tool. This option of choosing individual databases while in RefWorks defeats that purpose. If users want to search a particular database, that can easily be done from our library's website.

                      • Is there a way to configure the default view when opening Refworks to have the option to choose the menu from the sidebar?

Is there a way to configure the default view when opening Refworks to have the option to choose the menu from the sidebar?
Hence, when a user logs into their account - have the center display empty and have the use choose from the left column default options.
When our users log in - sometimes they get confused as to what they are looking at in the center area that currenlty defaults to 'all documents'
Would like to have the center blank and have use choose what they want to see..

                        • "output style manager" to define favorite styles in new RefWorks like in legacy RefWorks

This would allow the user to select styles, which should appear in Write-N-Cite.
So far WNC dynamically updates a style to the set of selectable styles when you create a bibliography on the website. I think it is not self-explanatory, that I have to choose a style for the bibliography first. I think many users don’t create a bibliography before they start working with Write-N-Cite.

                          • Assign custom sorting: chronologically, but in 17th ed. Chicago Style-Notes and Bib

While I want my entries to remain in Chicago Style, sometimes it is helpful to sort chronologically, but in more detail than RW currently allows which is only by year then author. I want to order the list more accurately: Year Ascending; Month Ascending; Day Ascending; Author; Title. I realize I can reorder the fields to begin with the full date, but then they are not in Chicago Style. How can I reorder the citations to be truly chronological (as I will have multiple dates within each year), without changing the Chicago Style order of each field?

                            • Combining citations when article was published in installments, in Chicago Style

When a journal article is published in installments, over the course of at least two issues, according to Chicago Style, it should appear this way:

Brown, George C., ed. “A Swedish Traveler in Early Wisconsin: The Observations of Fredrika Bremer.” Pts. 1 and 2. Wisconsin Magazine of History 61 (Summer 1978): 300–318; 62 (Autumn 1978): 41–56.

Mine turns out like this, even after I edited the “Edition” field so it could have the “Pts. 1 and 2” included:

McLaughlin, George. "Cincinnati Artists of the Munich School." Pts. 1 and 2. The American Art Review 2, no. 1, 2 (Nov., Dec.…

                              • Turn off A, B appending for citations by the same author in the same year in the 17th edition of Chicago Style-Notes and Bibliography

It seems that RefWorks automatically formats bib entries this way: if author is the same as another entry (or title is the same, if there is no author), and year is the same, the citation inserts an “a” and “b” behind the year. This is unnecessary for my purposes, and I can find no reference to this in the Chicago Style Notes and Bib (Author-Date is different and not what I use). How can I delete this default from the style editor?

How is it possible that "MLA" is not listed in our library databases??? Fortunately I have an appt with a librarian at 1:00, where I will either discover how to use RefWorks easily or switch to Endnote or something else.

                                    • Add "one line one cite" feature. Gives people ability to insert in-text citations in programs other than Word or Google Docs.

Our campus is using Microsoft Office 365. The "one line one cite" feature that was available in the Legacy version gives the option of being able to insert citations/create bibliographies in other writing software.

In Legacy RefWorks, admin can customize log-in page. We want this function taken over to New RefWorks.

                                        • Citation Style Editor: customize fields more

In an output-style the field Publish year (date) is listed twice in one reference type. Behind the Short title and behind Place of Publication. The first time it is mentioned, it should end with a parenthesis. The second time not. But it is not possible to define different settings. I think it should be possible to differ. My suggestion is: It should be possible to choose a field, make a copy and give it a new name, for example "Publication date with parenthesis". Then I can edit the field independent from the other field "Publication date".
