How can we improve RefWorks?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Citation style names need context

Many citation styles have many different versions (author-date, in-text, footnote) and editions (6th, 7th, 8th). The names in the list make it hard to choose which one is best. Clearer names and more information about the style, including last updated date, perhaps in a "hover" style information box, would help users. It would also be nice to be able to search/browse a list of styles instead of only having an autocomplete search box to find citation styles.

  2. New feature to link references

It will be very useful (at leas to me) to add a new feature that will allow to set a link between references, i.e.

    - is cited by
    - is review of
    - Is a rejoinder of
    - etc.

And the posibility to use that feature while building bibiographies to inser while citing a book where is reviewed, who has cited it,etc.

A search engine to follow that tree and navigate thru it would be useful too.

  3. Allow multiple independent bibliographies

Add an option to start a second new bibliography within a single document. This would be ideal for writing chapters where each section needs a separate bibliography.

This would be very simple to add and would help with keeping formating consistent for other objects in documents like figures.

  4. Provide the ability to add different reference types to an existing style

There are new forms of information all the time and students are referencing increasingly varied things in their assignment. It would be useful if we could add new reference types to our institutional referencing style to cover these things.

  5. Speed up the refresh

March 23, 2019. Refresh is agonizing slow, database is practically useless in this condition. Will not import an APA reference from from Google Scholar. You need to fix this.

  7. Better usage stats

The usage data currently available to admins isn't especially informative. We can see the total number of users and the total number of library views. But there's no way to know how many of those users created accounts, viewed their library once, and then never used RefWorks again vs. how many are using it regularly.

Also, when the usage data is downloaded, the date formatting is inconsistent. For the first 12 days of a given month, the dates are formatted M/D/YY with the month and date inverted. From the 13th onward, the dates are formatted YYYY-DD-MM.

Usage data for admins will be addressed in the future. In the meantime, admins can request usage data from Ex Libris via their Account Manager or Client Relationship Manager.
The date formatting is a known issue and will be addressed later this year.

  8. Modifying the view option when disply citations

The options of displaying references as a table and exporting into Excel is the first step in the direction of using RefWorks not only for collecting and organizing citations but for analysis and synthesis of the literature.
As now I have to ask my students to export RefWorks citations into Excel Synthesis Matrix form which allow them to analyze research studies (see the attachment of the matrix). They will delete columns/data that are not needed and add required data from the Research Notes field. It will be helpful if students can modify the Table view (add/remove columns) to include research…

  9. It disabled my Zotero. Yet the Write n Cite disappeared so now I cannot cite anything. There is no help posted anywhere for this either.

Disabled my other ref manager. But won't load up- also installed a virus on my laptop (dx by a computer repair person). Now I am left with no way to cite anything. No help posted anywhere for this. Thanks RefWorks.

  11. Customize sidebar menu width

Is there a way to expand the width of the sidebar menu to accommodate for longer folder names? That way, we'd be able to quickly read the entire folder name without having to hover over the number of results.

  12. Add "one line one cite" feature. Gives people ability to insert in-text citations in programs other than Word or Google Docs.

Our campus is using Microsoft Office 365. The "one line one cite" feature that was available in the Legacy version gives the option of being able to insert citations/create bibliographies in other writing software.

  14. No menu bar above toolbar

The blue menu bar doesn't reduce with the window, resulting in the account and language tab float over the toolbar. It prevents the user to access some tools when using RefWorks alongside other programs, with reduced windows side by side

  15. alternate titles confusing in record editing view

My concern is that the record editing interface (for Book Section) confuses the 'Book alternate title' and the 'Book section title'

Please see attachment #1: there, it is logical that the alternate title for the Book (Edited Collection) appears below the original Book title.

However, as attachment #2 shows, when editing a ‘Book Section’ record, the Alternate Title field appearing below the (book section) Title is confusing, since that field will hold the book alternate title.

What I'm suggesting here is that in a Book section record, the field should be called 'Book alternate title' and appear below Book Title.

  16. RefWorks style

  17. I attempted to set up the synchronizing with RefWorks from ProQuest and now I cannot import citations at all.

I attempted to follow the instructions from a ProQuest database to synchronize My Research folders with RefWorks. I had an existing RefWorks account and followed the instructions from ProQuest. Now I cannot import citations from EBSCO EDS or ProQuest Databases.
I am directed to the login screen. I login with my account, however, it will not import the citation. I have tried this with the Chrome, Firefox and Next browser.
I would delete my RefWorks account and try again but the login is tied to my college email address so I can't use a different email address to try to…

  18. Please make it possible to move large numbers of references from the last import page to a folder, all at once

I have just imported 7600 references that I want to put all into the same folder (working on a systematic review). I can only move small quantities at a time as the select all features is limited to the records displayed. Selecting "display 2000 records" causes refworks to crash.

  19. RefWorks creates reference review for doctoral papers so it is already formatted, so all I have to do is input the information

ReWorks creates the outline for a reference review. So I do not have to recreate the columns and titles for each category. So all I have to do is enter the information. RefWorks also puts in information in alphabetical or chronological order.
