How can we improve RefWorks?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Add option to include publication field in a repeated reference when author unkown

    In the Footnotes Settings in the citation style editor, there is an option to "Show only author, title & cited pages" for a repeated reference. This is great!

    However, in Chicago Notes & Bibliography style, when the citation for an unsigned newspaper article is repeated (for example), the shortened citation should also include the publication.

    For example, this reference would be initially cited as such:

    "Number of Out-of-Wedlock Births a Record," Hartford Courant, November 26, 2006.

    But the shortened note should read:

    "Number," Hartford Courant.

  3. Make save button more prominent

    It would be great if the save button on the reference information editing screen was more prominent. For example, it could be a different color, like blue. Right now it is hard to find and I accidentally click the x button at the top instead, which means I lose my work. You could also add a window that asks if you want to save when you click the x button. Thank you.

  4. RCM Issue: Citing Works with the Same Author and Year

    According to APA 7 #8.18 Avoiding Ambiguity in In-Text Citations (https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations/basic-principles/same-year-first-author#:~:text=To%20avoid%20ambiguity%2C%20when%20the,al.%E2%80%9D%20in%20every%20citation ), multiple authors should still be listed in in-text citations to avoid ambiguity, when citing multiple works by three or more authors published in the same year.

    However, based on our review, it seems that the current RCM does not consider this special scenario. For works with three or more authors, it only include the name of the first author followed by “et al.”, without considering the ambiguity rules.   5. Generate bibliographies in multiple formats.

    We currently have now tabbed delimited format but would like to see XML and RW Tagged format.

  6. Remove shared folder access codes

    We've noticed that when a user shares a folder, the link that the recipient receives generates a screen that asks for an access code if they are not already logged into RefWorks.

    We can see that there is a login link in the top banner but most of our users will miss this.

    Is it possible to have the usual login options (e-mail address and institutional login) in the main screen?

  7. Show the record count of ONLY the folder being deduplicated

    When finding duplicates in a top level folder, the record count shows the sum of all subfolders too, which suggests that they are ALL being searched (they are NOT at present). If the record count shows only the active folder being searched, it is more clear.

  8. Make it faster

    For something that it paid for, my RefWorks is always moving REAL slow compared to other paid reference managers I've used (mainly EndNote). RefWorks seems to have trouble handling the 2,000+ references I've accumulated (and continue to accumulate) over my career.

    Thank you for your feedback. We have introduced improvements to optimize performance in RefWorks. Note, that performance is also affected by connection speeds, as RefWorks is a cloud-based service.

  9. Viewing abstracts when "All References" is displayed by Full View

    It is more useful if it is possible to view abstracts when "All References" is displayed by Full View.
