The Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers
A famous general encyclopedia edited by Denis Diderot and D'Alembert between 1751 and 1772.

The Encyclopédie stands out as a fundamental reference tool on account of the wide range of topics covered in many different fields of knowledge, especially:
- in its philosophical articles with contributions of the most famous writers and philosophers of the French 18th’s century: Montesquieu, J. J. Rousseau, Voltaire…
- in the detailed description of the mechanical arts.
We can find many sites with digitalization of later editions of the Encyclopédie (and also in your KB!), but the proposed items are infinitely less interesting.
This scientific online edition powered by the French Academy of Sciences with numerous collaborations is not a simple digitalization and has high added value:
- it publishes the totality of the 11 engravings volumes (generally only the text’s volumes are proposed) with a correlation between text and images.
- technical articles annotated by specialists.
- Extensible Markup Language and easy navigation between texts and engravings and in cross references.
