  1. Improved spotlight treatment for news and images

Ability to customize the font, font color, and background color. Ability to configure thumbnails (size, number, and placement, for example.)

  2. Add "Council of Science Editors" (CSE) to Cite this Item options

Faculty has requested that Council of Science Editors (CSE) formatting style be added as an option in Summon's "Cite this Item" drop-down menu.

  3. LC Call Number Browse Relevance Searching

When searching by LC call number in Summon, it matches to the Cutter number as well as to the LC call number. The default "relevance" ordering doesn't put the call numbers that begin with the LC call number at the top of the list. There isn't a choice to force that ordering. In Alma, it is possible to search by shelf list, so it shouldn't be that difficult to do the same on the public side of a shelf list.

  4. Option to remove Language button from the burger menu if necessary

The option for Language (English) appears in the menu even if you are only making English available. If there is only one language available, users should not see an option to select another.

  5. Make the Summon search box widget a responsive design

I want to embed the Summon search box widget on a Moodle page. Search box length is 'static'. It can be set to particular length but it is then not responsive in different screen sizes. The Summon preview pane widget is already responsive i.e. you can set length to 'fluid' and it changes width in different screens. I would like to see this also for the search box.

  6. About customizing the contents of the simple record displayed at the top of the Summon over Alma service page.

Currently, the contents of the brief record displayed at the top of the Summon over Alma Service Page are not customizable. We would like to be able to define this display freely, as in Primo VE.

For example, in addition to the fields currently displayed, we would like to add Record type, Statement of responsibility (author from 245 $c), Publisher name and place, Series name and number, etc.

Example (parts in brackets are not displayed in current service page)

    [BOOK]
    Winnie-the-Pooh[ / A.A. Milne ; with decorations by Ernest H. Shepard ]
    Milne, A. A. 1882-1956 Alan Alexander; Shepard, Ernest…

  7. Allow to limit search results by word or page count, or a document length range

This should get rid of minor articles such as might appear when searching in newspapers. Also, it might help in further weeding-out book reviews. Plus, there are times users want articles that discuss an issue in-depth and they don't want a 2-page article from some journal. Conversely, I've helped users who get huge articles from journals who would like to find articles that are just 3-4 pages in length, etc.

  8. Link author headings from different sources in Summon

We want to link author headings from different sources in Summon.

Currently, we have two styles of author headings appearing in Summon. One set comes from the bibliographic records in our local catalogue and is based on Library of Congress name authority headings (i.e. surname, first names, date of birth). The other set comes from the records in our institutional repository and uses Dublin Core (i.e. surname, initials).

We do not want to change the data input style for either system as both headings are equally valid.

However, we would like the ability to link the author headings coming from…

  9. add "film review" content type

Summon has a "book review" content type, but no "film review" content type.
There is no intuitive way to find film reviews, which may be tagged as "book review." This can be confusing when searching for reviews of a book that was made into a movie.

  10. Include the journal impact factor in the results display

To help our students judge the quality of the results it would be good if the journal's impact factor could be displayed in the results. Or even better, provided as a sorting or limiting option so that students could view results in those journals with the highest impact factor, in the same way they can limit by peer review. Although impact factors are not a perfect tool, it would help get the message across that not all journals are equal. This feature would probably need to be restricted to those libraries with a subscription to JCR.

  11. Show DVD covers in search results

Summon should show DVD covers as well as book covers in search results.

Syndetics (and other content providers) have DVD content and covers available but this does not display in Summon. Summon should send EAN and UPC numbers to Syndetics as well as ISBNs to enhance the search results with DVD information.

  12. Make searches with ‘query expansion’ customisable

We would like to be able to add, remove or edit query expansion topic matches to improve the topic and subject matches and prevent incorrect query expansion.

Query expansion is supposed to link synonymous subjects and topics, so the user doesn’t have to enter all terms in their search (e.g. ‘heart attack’ and ‘myocardial infarction’). Sometimes the query expansion function gives incorrect or unhelpful topic matches. For example a search for ‘civil litigation’ automatically expands to include ‘jurisprudence’. These are not synonymous terms.

ExLibris tell us that currently it isn’t possible to change or remove specific instances of query expansion,…

  13. Make it possible to construct a search box for all online material plus physical material from one location only

At present it is possible to construct a search box which excludes all physical material from one or more library locations. Unfortunately it also excludes physical material found at both those library locations and others, when these share a bibliographical record in the LMS. Make a truly location-specific search box possible.

  15. Add geographic facet to the results page

The ability to limit the search on the results page with a geographic subject facet. This would allow users to search within their results for items on regional specific items.

  16. Add ability to apply your EZproxy to the DOI field links in Summon search results

Currently in Summon search results, the DOI field provides a link that does not include EZproxy. So users might get to the item via this DOI link but since they have not arrived there through EZproxy, they might not be properly authenticated for access. Please give the option to prepend your EZproxy URL to the DOI links.

  18. Summon topics should yield Credo topics--not just Credo articles--when relevant

For example, a Summon search on "cyberbullying" in our instance retrieves the Credo article "Taking on the School Bullies." The Credo topic page "Cyberbullying" is more relevant, but Ex Libris reports, "Showing the Credo topic page is out of scope for the topics feature."

I would like Summon topics to retrieve Credo topics results, especially when they're more relevant than Credo article results.

  19. Ability to exclude a facet value on the results page

At present you can only exclude a facet value by going into the "More" option. For example the Book Review content type is probably not that useful. So it would be ideal if the was a way to exclude them when the results are displayed. The default action when clicking on the Book Review content type would be to just include this type.
This is something available in Primo and would be a great addition to Summon.

  20. Set up ‘search within’ functionality for ProQuest One Literature in Summon

Would it be possible to set up 'search within' functionality in Summon for the One Literature database? I understand that this is not currently possible at present so have been recommended to suggest this via the Ideas Exchange.
