How can we improve Summon?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Provide the ability to separate books and ebooks when searching.

Currently, we cannot search print books only. We can separate ebooks/books if we want ebooks only be either selecting the full text limiter or the electronic books subject limiter. However, we can't do the same for print (hard copy books).

  2. Make "Best Bets" show up when tag keywords are present in search, not just when there's an exact match

Right now, Best Bets show up when there's an exact match on tags, e.g., our job search assistance information shows up when someone searches "jobs" or "job search," etc., but not when someone searches "how can i look for jobs," etc. (unless we anticipate every situation where that tag word might be used). Could the Best Bets be brought up whenever keywords are present in the search, not just when there's an exact match?

  3. Exclude Newspaper Articles and Book Reviews in default basic search

The ability to configure the exclusions of either newspaper articles, book reviews or both from the default search for an institution. Any search conducted would begin with these excluded, and the user could turn off these filters via the user interface.

  4. More cleary identify between full-text articles and full-text abstracts

As an electronic resources librarian, I often get patron-confusion reports when they believe they cannot access a full-text article; often enough the full-text of the article is not available online, but the article's abstract is. Icons in Summon often represent these abstracts as full-text articles.

Due to limitations in the metadata associated with some content sources, there are cases where content that is full text is marked as being only an abstract, or where an abstract is marked as full text. Currently the system errs on marking it as full text, which provides some false positives. We could flip the priority which would reduce if not eliminate full-text icons appearing for abstracts, however, this would result in some full text being erroneously marked as abstract only.

  5. "Exact" search for certain fields

Add the functionality to do an "exact" search on certain fields. For example there are very short titles which can be search much better this way. Also signatures in the LCCallNumber field could be found much easier. We are api users (Backend Summon, Frontend VuFind) and are helping ourselves at the moment with "constructed" values for the (for example) LCCallNumber to simualte the possibility of an exact search - but this is far from optimal.

  6. Exclude Content Type Newspaper Article should include Online Newspaper Content

The Newspaper facet in Summon should also include/exclude online content from newspapers. Online newspaper content is currently coded as a Web Resources

If you do a search for "Devos education" with newspaper articles excluded, 25 of the first 30 citations are from:

    Washington Post - Blogs

    Washington Post (Online)

    New York Times (Online)

  7. Be able to search Journal/magazine titles consistently

It would be really helpful to search for journal/magazine titles like we do books. Sometimes we need the title not the articles within.

  8. Automatically searching for the corrected spelling

Google-like searching using misspellings; automatically searching for the corrected spelling with a link to search the original misspelled terms; current behavior presents results using misspelling and link to search on corrected terms

  10. export search results

It would be helpful if users could export an entire set of search results without first having to send them to the folder one by one. If it's too complicated to engineer a way to "select all" with any quantity of results, perhaps just being able to "select and export all" when there are fewer than 100 results would be of some use.

  11. Exclude other libraries' LibGuides from "Add results beyond your library's collections" by default

The "Add results beyond your library's Collection" facet should by default exclude other libraries' LibGuides so their Circulation, ILL, and other library services LibGuides are not shown to my library's patrons. It is confusing for patrons to search for interlibrary loan only to find dozens of other libraries' LIbGuides.

  12. New Acquisitions listing for our library

Our library users have expressed great interest in having access to a New Acquisitions listing for our Library. This would display print books received and eBooks purchased in recent weeks, and would refresh on a regular basis. (It would be a bit different to limiting search results by publication date, as we sometimes purchase older publications).

Considering that we already send our catalogue records to Summon, and that we activate new eBook titles via the Client Centre, could there be an option or a facet in the Summon search interface to provide a listing of our new acquisitions?

    We would…

  13. Allow facet for "Online" (electronic) vs "In the Library" (physical)

A simple facet that helps users distinguish between electronic materials online and physical materials in the library.
Using the current "Refine your Search" facet for this purpose feels problematic: "Full text online" feels jargony in our context and also isn't intuitive that it would include non-textual electronic resources such as streaming audio and video, while "Library Catalog" feels similarly jargony and includes electronic records that exist in our catalog. This facet also includes other options that are valuable, but in the facet I am proposing simplicity in having only those two options would be ideal.

  14. Make Summon support Baidu for search history function

Summon added search history function on May release 2018, which is great. The data is stored in Google. Unfortunately, Google is not working in China. so could you add the capability of supporting Baidu (the largest search engine vendor in China)?

Baidu supports oauth 2.0. Here is the online doc:

  15. Retrieve similar documents using the native 'MoreLikeThis' Lucene feature

Lucene's 'MoreLikeThis' feature retrieves similar documents based on a seed, which can be either a piece of text, or an already retrieved document (syntax-free search).

  16. The publication date filter is currently designed to allow filtering within the last 100 years, insufficient to finding U.S. primary sources

The publication date filter is currently designed to allow filtering within the last 100 years. This is insufficient when trying to limit results to find primary source documents, e.g., related to the U.S. Civil War, 1861-1865.

  17. Create a facet for Abstracts (or Conference Abstracts)

Abstracts are currently classified as Journal Articles, which causes confusion as readers are expecting to be able to read the full text of a published article that does not exist. Creating a facet for Abstracts would allow them to be correctly classified and would improve the user experience

  19. Make combination of "Fulltext Online" and facet "Library Location" results possible

Many of our patrons are interested in setting the filters to results available in the specific library location they are actually working in. They miss a functionality to combine fulltext results with the specific library holdings.

  20. Expand Best Bets Characters to include :

This would enable best bet recommendations for book and article titles that have a subtitle.

At the moment tags for best bets have limitations on the types of characters that can he used i.e. letters, numbers or any of the following symbols (-_ .&/'@#). Colons (:) cannot be used. It would be very helpful to be able to use colons because of how common they are in titles. Our zero result usage stats show that our users are searching article titles that include a colon.
