How can we improve Alma?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Authority control: ability to exclude certain fields and subfields from authority control. Prsence of 700 $i fails the link to auth file.

Presence of 700 $i in the bib record causes the heading not to link to the authority record and it reports as an unlinked heading, when in fact the rest of the 700 field does have an existing authority record.

  2. Search by LCCN in the external resources search in the MD editor.

The metadata editor, we would like to be able to search external resources by fields 010 and 028, the LCCN.

  3. Ability to select a subject after F3

In the metadata editor - the option for a "select" button next to the "view" is indeed required in "tools - Browse bib headings"

  4. add 'append fields to a record' functionality

In Aleph, we used a lot the job p-manage-18 (load Aleph sequential record format) with the parameter: Update current records in the database - Append fields to a record.

This is no longer possible in Alma, I can only overwrite a record completely, but not add fields to a existing record.
The only way at the moment is to export an existing record (to MarcEdit for example), add the new fields there manually, and import the record again.
Usually, we have to add up to 100 new metadata fields per record, and they are all different per record, therefore I…

  5. normalization rules

Expand language for rules. The few terms, like removeField or prefix, just permit poor operations.
Maybe the use of another language like c++, basic or java can help.

  6. Add more Law Libraries to the External Search Profiles

We would like more Law Libraries to be added to the External Search Profiles. Law Libraries use a different classification schema for call numbers and it would be great if we could add the correct information into our records when importing them.

Specifically we would like the following:
    York University
    Alberta Law Libraries
    Law Society of Upper Canada
    Supreme Court of Canada Library

  7. Duplicate MARC fields

The ability to duplicate MARC fields in the bib and holdings.

  8. Include References in Browse Bib Headings

The Browse Bib Headings feature currently only includes headings from the 1XX fields. It would make it a lot easier to find authorized headings if the references from the 4XX and 5XX were included in the index. For an example of how this *should* work, please see the Library of Congress's authority file at http://authorities.loc.gov. The screenshots below show what you get if you search for variants on a person's name. In the first image, you see that you are given a "References" button. Clicking that button shows you a listing of the authorized terms that should be used…

  10. Change duplicate icons in MD editor

In MD editor, the icons for "view bibliographic record" and "view inventory" are identical. Could one of these icons be changed?

  11. Add a flag to indicate that a bibliographic record has been reviewed by a cataloger

Since bibliographic, holdings, and often items records are created at the point of order, it is impossible to easily tell whether or not a record has already been reviewed by a cataloger (for those types of resources that are still manually cataloged from the material in hand). A flag is needed to display (similar to the suppressed icon) on a list of titles in Repository Search so that staff can tell at a glance that a record has already been vetted by other qualified staff.

This is particularly necessary for staff working within a consortium; staff from one institution need…

  12. Fix split editor display when 856 field is present

I have noticed that when there is a really long URL in the 856 field on a bibliographic record, the right pane in split editor view does not display correctly. You have to pull the left pane over as far as you can to see the contents of the right pane. Even after moving the left pane over you still cannot see the right pane very well. This makes editing a holdings record while looking at the bibliographic record very difficult. Please see the attached image "856_1" to see how the record appears in split view before moving the left…

  13. Metadata Editor : Record locking and releasing

We need to be able to release an individual Bib or Holdings record locked by another cataloguer, in order to work on it immediately, without having to release all records locked by that person.

  15. When editing a normalization, merge or indication rule there is only an option to preview and save. There should also be a "save as" option

What happens now is user edits his rule, is happy with it, then he must copy it to his mouse, create a new rule, and paste it into the new rule. A "save as" would be much more logical. User would do "save" as he does today to change the existing rule, and "save as" to save his changes to a new rule.

  16. Adding the "Assign record to another cataloger" functionality in search results actions links

We use regularly the 'Assign record to another cataloger' functionality in the MD editor for corrections, for records enhancements, ... But this is unfortunately limited to catalogers roles.
It would really improve our resource management workflows if this Assign function was made available from search results lists. Other staff roles would so push records in an enhancements flow (such as improve marc records for newly created portfolios, such as indexing tasks, such as apply corrections that don't require having book in hands...). We actually use work orders for some in those tasks but this workflows are not always appropriate and…

  17. Make merge rule actions fully interchangeable with all merge conditions

Currently, merge actions (add, remove, replace) only operate with specific conditional statements. For example, ADD when CONTAINS or REPLACE when DOES NOT CONTAIN. This enhancement should add the ability to use all action words with any valid conditional statement, permitting uses such as ADD when DOES NOT CONTAIN or REPLACE when CONTAINS.
